I don't think it's a bad idea at all (I've been also dreaming about it).
I would start from basics - evolve them to get medkits when hurt,
collect stuff and frag everything that moves. No walls at first, just
one room. I don't have any knowledge on how the 3D world is
represented in the programming interface, but would eagerly like to
hear.
I think there are some sorts of external AI robots for Quake that
look like players, but I suppose they use rule-based methods or
something. If I recall it correctly, they can learn too, and are too
heavy opponents to be nice to play against.
Do you know if it's possible to interface Quake servers from
standard C++ (gcc for example), not just QuakeC?
