>>> 'prometrix' problem from robin -- Thu Jan 12 10:00:53 1989 <<<

Wafer stuck inside system. Cannot retrieve. Keyboard produces
no response. Cycled system on and off twice to no avail.

>>> 'prometrix' problem from hoagland -- Thu Jan 12 16:13:16 1989 <<<

problem: User reports Prometrix does not respond to any keyboard
          commands- appears locked up.

cause: Unknown. Previous loss of wafer in test fixture may have
        contributed to CPU "crash".

solution: Reboot system. On-off switch on rear of console terminal
           was cycled to effect "cold" boot. The prometrix is up
           and available for use.

>>> 'prometrix' problem from robin -- Tue Jan 31 08:48:12 1989 <<<

Taurus box light does not respond to activation through the computer -- unable
to make system respond to keyboard. Tried cycling power off/on at back of
terminal console to reboot. Attempted to make measurements, but chuck
would not go into Kokusai unit at the proper time. Software seemed to be
unaware that wafer was not in the unit, and proceeded as usual.

>>> 'prometrix' problem from hoagland -- Tue Jan 31 14:19:47 1989 <<<

problem: Taurus box light remains off after activation; wafer
          stage will not enter test fixture in AUTO mode.

cause: Taurus box light burned out- unit still works. Stage
        was locked outside test fixture because someone inadvertently(?)
        lowered probe head in MANUAL mode, which disables stage motion
        outside test fixture.

solution: Taurus box light needs replacement. To raise probe head test
           fixture was switched to MANUAL mode and probe head raised
           manually. Unit was then switched backed to AUTO mode and
           samples taken normally.

>>> 'prometrix' problem from robin -- Tue Feb 14 07:37:29 1989 <<<

Proceeded through Collect Contour Data routine up to point where
prompted to load wafer and hit return. Did so. System did not respond.

This has come up the last 3 or 4 times I've tried to use the system.
Would the tech please run several wafers through contour data collection
before pronouncing that the system is up? Thanks.

>>> 'prometrix' problem from hoagland -- Tue Feb 14 17:27:36 1989 <<<

The prometrix was thoroughly tested(with many measurements) and
found to be working fine. I contacted the manufacturer and was
provided with additional booting instructions which might expedite
recovery in the event operator mishap leads to a computer crash.
Regretably these procedures don't seem to work.... more work needs
to be done here. The prometrix will be up tomorrow afternoon with
some amended operating instructions.

>>> 'prometrix' problem from hoagland -- Wed Feb 15 15:26:42 1989 <<<

The following is a recovery procedure to be used in case
the test stage hangs up while loading a wafer into the shielded
test fixture.  The first step is to raise the probe arm;

Facing the tester section, set the AUTO/STEP/MAN switch to MAN.
Depress the following keys in sequence: PROBE DOWN, RESET,
PROBE DOWN, and RESET. Finally, set the AUTO/STEP/MAN switch
back to AUTO.

To reset the computer depress the following keys on the VT100
keyboard in sequence:  SETUP, 0, CNTRL-C, and CNTRL-C.  A
"." prompt will appear, to which "@MENU <RETURN>" is typed.
When the main menu appears, proceed normally.

A copy of this procedure will be attached to the Prometrix
terminal.

>>> 'prometrix' problem from robin -- Thu Feb 16 07:43:09 1989 <<<

Same problem occurred. Stage would not enter Kokusai unit. Followed
Steve's reset instructions *exactly*, to no avail. Why doesn't this
unit work the way it used to? Why should it have to be reset?

>>> 'prometrix' problem from robin -- Wed May  3 14:11:44 1989 <<<

Prompt will not appear when system is enabled.

>>> 'prometrix' problem from hoagland -- Wed May  3 16:52:33 1989 <<<

The prometrix CPU is dead. Prometrix Inc. recommended swapping out
the display board in the main chassis, which I did with the spare
VT100 terminal board we recently acquired from Newman. No improvement
was noted. Work will continue on this problem Thursday, with information
posted as available.

>>> 'prometrix' problem from hoagland -- Thu May  4 15:31:23 1989 <<<

The prometrix is up, minus the graphics plotting routines. It's
graphics card failed and will be repaired ASAP. I am ordering
parts now along with an extender card(hopefully!) and prints should
arrive within the week from Prometrix. If all goes well this machine
should be fully operational once again in a couple of weeks.

>>> 'prometrix' problem from robin -- Tue May  9 07:30:39 1989 <<<

Enabled system. Brought up menu. Hitting return caused a lower
case "g" to appear in the upper left corner of the screen, followed
by the message

	TURN ON THE KOKUSAI AND MAKE SURE THAT
	THE IEEE 488 CABLE IS CONNECTED

The Kokusai was on. I did not know how to proceed. System is unusable.

>>> 'prometrix' problem from hoagland -- Thu May 11 15:38:42 1989 <<<

problem: Menu displays error message indicating kokusai is not
          communicating with prometrix.

cause: Loose pin in IEEE cable connector which attaches to IEEE
        I/O card in VT100 backplane.

solution: Reseat connector pins and card- all cable connections
           to rear of card cage seem flakey. Care should be taken
           to seat everything tightly before restoring cover to
           terminal. The prometrix is up, without graphics capabilities.

>>> 'prometrix' problem from robin -- Thu May 18 07:56:31 1989 <<<

Ran Collect Contour Data sequence. After entering all information,
was prompted to "load wafer on chuck and hit return". Upon doing
so, got the following error messages:

	Error in routine IBSEND: No valid listener on the bus

	?Err 0 Non-FORTRAN error call
	in routine "KSTAT" line ?

	from routine "GETCO2" line ?

	from routine "COLECT" line ?

Why doesn't this system ever work??????

>>> 'prometrix' problem from hoagland -- Thu May 18 17:01:02 1989 <<<

The previous IBSEND error is an alternate indication of IEEE interface
failure. Apparently the prometrix is experiencing some intermittent
data failure which has manifested itself as a variety of screen and
measurement glitches. According to another technician Bruce at
Prometrix, we may have suffered corruption of hard disk files. He
will send us some updated software tomorrow, and I will perform some
diagnostics on the disk to check for damage. Information will be posted
as available.

>>> 'prometrix' problem from hoagland -- Fri May 19 16:42:38 1989 <<<

The bad sector diagnostic revealed no bad sectors on our hard
disk. A check of all power supplies turned up nothing out of the
ordinay. Whatever has been causing occasional errors to display
on the console is getting progressively worse- the AED>ERROR is shown
almost continuously.

>>> 'prometrix' problem from hoagland -- Mon May 22 16:51:53 1989 <<<

The AED ERROR message indicates failed communication between controller
card and the hard disk. To monitor disk access and test related power
supplies will require removal of the disk unit and fabrication of an
extension data cable. When this is complete testing will commence.
The prometrix serial I/O card was modified(jumper pin X to H) to enable
the break key, so if the computer crashes the break key can be pressed
to force a warm boot at the lowest level on the disk controller card.
This will evoke an "@" prompt, to which "173000G<return>" is typed,
returning the "AED>" prompt.

>>> 'prometrix' problem from hoagland -- Wed May 24 09:18:24 1989 <<<

All attempts to boot the prometrix now produce an "AED>ERROR" message.
The next step in diagnosis will be to reformat the hard disk, requiring
software to reload after the format. We currently do not have any
system disks, but a set is in the mail and should arrive in the next couple
of days.

>>> 'prometrix' problem from hoagland -- Fri May 26 13:19:15 1989 <<<

The software from Prometrix arrived today. Included with floppy
disks was a bundle of field service bulletins, 1 detailing the
formatting procedure for the hard disk(technical bulletin TB1100-1).
Regrettably this package contained only page 2 of that bulletin,
rendering the entire process impossible until the first page is
procurred. I called prometrix but it seems all the field engineers
are out today, so further work must be postponed until Tuesday when
the missing page can be faxed to us. Sorry.

>>> 'prometrix' problem from hoagland -- Tue May 30 16:23:47 1989 <<<

I left a message for the technical support group on Friday to
fax the missing page from their disk formatting bulletin, but nothing
had arrived as of 3PM today. I called Prometrix again this afternoon
and spoke with a Marilyn in technical support at 3:30PM, who promised
her best efforts to get this information out today. As soon as the
document arrives I will commence formatting of the hard disk.

>>> 'prometrix' problem from hoagland -- Wed May 31 16:29:56 1989 <<<

problem: Initial report was that CPU intermittently hung-up during
          measurements. This degenerated into intermittent failure
          of boot procedure, and finally all attempts to load program
          failed.

cause: Bad hard disk. Apparently the "system" area of that disk has
        some fault which allows it to be formatted at both low and high
        levels, as well as having files copied to it, but nothing can
        be read. Disk responded to a "DIR DL:" at the "." prompt by
        hanging up(list all files). Entire format and program loading
        procedure was repeated 4 times without success before hard disk
        was swapped out.

solution: Replace hard disk. Program loaded and ran first time following
           format of replacement disk. Console was powered off/on 3 times
           with successful load of program. The prometrix is up for use.
