The discrepency is probibly due to running the lab on N2 bypass when the
air compressors were down. Although all the n2 goes through the BATCHtrol,
it may have exceeded the upper range of the mass flow meter. I would be
hard to check without increasing the bulk tank pressure to >100 psi and
putting the lab into bypass mode (which I do not want to do). If use and
fill totals agree next month, I will assume this to be the source of the
discrepency.

Mr. Chiladakis (2-1943) from the Coll. of Chemistry called and
informed me that they are negotiating a new LN contract with
Liquid Carbonics which will probably come in at a lower price
than last year's.
To be able to have maximum negotiating flexibility they would like us
to consider buying our tank, which we are currently leasing from LC
($450/Mo.) Chemistry bought theirs about 30 yrs ago.

Hal Brown from Purchasing (2-2985) has been negotiating a buy-out
plan for us, approx. $620/Mo for 5 yrs. I agreed to go with this plan
and hope that the increase in the monthly fee will be offset by the
reduced price in liquid nitrogen.

FYI: Changes in consumption Vs. time is related to how hot we have the

into the MBE furnaces and substrate heater.

is leaking. I'm not sure of my valve terminology, but the nut which tightens
down around the valve shaft is very loose.

We would like to run the MBE over the weekend so it would be
convenient for us if nitrogen is delivered by friday. Also, I plan
on growing tomorrow and we would like to run on Thursday as well.

Also, please add Pat Harshman to your n2 mailing list

I noticed a possible problem with the pressure relief valve which follows
the main outside valve that controls the MBE liquid N2 line. Since we
now have a new shut-off valve on this line inside the MBE lab, we have
been keeping this outside valve open all the time (the last month or so).
Tonight, about an hour or so after the external tank was filled, the
outside pressure relief valve on our line was releasing considerable
amounts of liquid n2 into the parking lot. External tank pressure is just
over 120 psi now and everything is stabilized, but we probably lost
several inches of liquid (5 in.?). Is this release of pressure normal after
a fill, and is it just a matter of our valve popping before the
main pressure relief valve on the tank, or is this a problem? It
seems to me that the problem with our valve going first it would dump
liquid into the parking lot, whereas the main pressure relief valve
presumably dumps gas into the parking lot.

If this is a problem and it is difficult to fix, we could probably be
talked into simply keeping the outside valve closed when we are not
running.
