	The new DECtalk's are DEFECTIVE !! That's the problem. A diagnostic
pattern of red LED lights in the back corresponds to the code for
"Defective Logic Board". At least, that's the case for the second of the
2 new DECtalk's. When I connected the old one to zirconium today, it worked
just fine. Could you please disassemble the DECtalk in the microlab lobby
and give it to me? If our schedules don't overlap tomorrow, maybe you could
leave it with Katalin?  Thanks.

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

 I will be leaving the lobby dectalk unit in Alex's office for him.

>>> 'dectalk' problem from bob -- Mon Oct  2 15:07:05 1989 <<<

dectalk has been removed from the Microlab and returned to DEC
for repair. Both units we received were dumb.

>>> 'dectalk' problem from phillip -- Wed Oct  4 07:06:43 1989 <<<

The dectalk unit has been reinstalled in the lobby.
It is working correctly now.

>>> 'dectalk' problem from bob -- Tue Oct 10 08:22:32 1989 <<<

dectalk is again dumb, ie not working!

>>> 'dectalk' problem from phillip -- Wed Oct 11 07:40:18 1989 <<<

Traded out the dectalk unit itself. The defective eqpt. is in
Katalin's office where Alex West will pick it up today.
'dectalk' is up and working.

>>> 'dectalk' problem from phillip -- Wed Dec 20 06:53:39 1989 <<<

 Replaced missing jumper in the dectalk circuit.
This feature is again working. (Lauren, you were right! This was not
working until today. It should be o.k. now)

>>> 'dectalk' problem from phillip -- Wed Dec 20 08:58:58 1989 <<<

This feature has been 'verbally' added to the rm.406.
Sending a message to 'dectalk' now can be heard throughout
the lab and in the office as well.

>>> 'dectalk' problem from phillip -- Fri Feb 16 14:21:10 1990 <<<

It may be desirable to modify the 'voice' of the machine.
Alex, is this hard to do? Is it time consuming?
Please apprise soon.
thank you

>>> 'dectalk' problem from galewski -- Sat Feb 17 17:45:56 1990 <<<

The dectalk works very well now. It is loud enough to hear. Is the
turning up of the gain somewhere responsible for the intercom hissing?

A suggestion: I noticed that if you do not put periods in faithfully
after each line, or sentence, the message runs together and becomes
hard to understand. Maybe include that in the instructions when the
dectalk screen comes up that it is important to end every sentence
with a period.

Another suggestion: Would be very nice to have an automatic repeat
option for message so that you do not have to type it in twice. Much
easier to get the broadcast message if repeated once. OR, if it would
be possible to get into vi with something like a "~v" escape (like mail)
that would provide the same feature and also the ability to edit the
message without having to retype it from scratch.

Alex is gone, off the payroll since December. I let him keep his
acct. for a while as a convenience to him.
I think he is a student in molecular biology or some such.
We cannot expect him to respond. I'll terminate his acct. if you like.

Consider the DECtalk as a black
box. We have a spare. I think Kevin Z. has it, also the manuals.
If it quits, sent it back to DEC.
In a pinch, Prof. J. Steve Smith knows how it works and how to program it.

 The manuals I need are as follows:
1. DECtalk DTCO1  (EK-DTCO1-OM-OO3)  Owner's Manual
2. DECtalk DTCO1  (EK-DTCO1-RM-OO3)  Programmers reference Manual

This is what the covers of the books say. I saw them once.
If you can get a set that would be great!
thanx,pg
