  • The FUNET's backbone went over to Telecom Finland's ATM network (10-34 Mbit/s).
  • NORDUnet gets a 34 Mbit/s transatlantic connection.
  • The Altavista.digital.com Internet search service begins. Anyone can use it free to look for Web pages in various parts of the world. In the Nordic countries, the Nordic Web Index project is launched.
  • Use of the WWW overtakes FTP in the NSFNET statistics, i.e. it is now the world's most frequently used Internet application.
  • Netscape goes on the stock market and its share value rises to USD 3 billion on the first day.
  • SUN Microsystems releases the platform-independent Java language and the HotJava browser written using it. Applets written in Java can add animations and various interactive features to Web pages.
