Nick and Channel delays in IRC 2.9
The IRC server version 2.9 introduces a locking mechanism for nicknames
and channels in order to protect users and the network from service
abuse. The locking is done on local server level, and it effects only
the local users on the server. A delay of minimum 15 minutes is used
to keep nick/channel locked, once it has been considered to be vulnerable.
Nicknames can get locked if:
- nickname is killed either by operator or collision.
- net has split and the nickname was lost in the split.
Channels can get locked if:
- net has split, channel has lost channel operators in the split,
and the channel becomes empty. The lock is triggered in the split, but it
is activated only if the channel becomes empty. Rejoin of the net or expiring
the delay timeout will release the lock again.
Attempt to use a locked nick/channel generates a message like:
NewNick Nick/channel is temporarily unavailable
