The purpose of the archive is to facilitate the exchange of NeXT software and to reduce the number of times that the wheel must be reinvented. Access to the archive is via annonymous ftp to umd5.umd.edu (128.8.10.5). The archive is in the NeXT directory. The archive is currently empty. What I'd like to see in the archive are: 1) Information -- Known bugs, fixes, work-arounds, suggestions. Pointers to other archives. 2) Executables -- Programs (and objects!) written explicitly for the NeXT, and UNIX programs that have been ported (e.g., Kermit, TeX). Executables will only be made available if source is also made available somehow (could be from another archive). 3) Source -- When space permits and the sources are not available from another archive. If you have something that you would like to see in the archive, send me (feldman@umd5.umd.edu) mail. If you find something useful, chances are that others will find it useful, too. It gets hacked up every so often, but there has been no huge amount of effort put into keeping it 100% up to date or accurate. The comp.archives stuff is a much more thorough attempt to keep track of a lot more information about each archive site. Unfortunately it seems doomed because of a long lag time between the time an interesting thing shows up on the net and the time someone notices. A more reasonable approach would be for some responsible person to watch each newsgroup & maintain a similar list of archive sites on a group-by-group basis. Jon Granrose (odin@ucscb.ucsc.edu) has done this for comp.graphics. Note: if you don't have anonymous FTP access yourself but you are a uunet customer, they will FTP stuff for you and then uucp it to you. # anonymous ftp site list. additions/corrections/changes to # mailrus!emv or emv@starbarlounge.cc.umich.edu. your mileage may # vary. read comp.archives for more complete archive site information. # # Edward Vielmetti, U of Michigan # # version 1.1 of some time in Feb '89 # # 128.174.5.20 a.cs.uiuc.edu # parallel gnumake, TeX, dvi2ps, gif # 129.105.49.1 accuvax.nwu.edu # PibTerm 4.1.3 # 36.56.0.208 ahwahnee.stanford.edu # pcip interface specs # ai.toronto.edu # Canada, SunOS4.0 SLIP beta, lots of stuff # albanycs.albany.edu # best of comp.graphics # allspice.lcs.mit.edu # RFC1056 (PCMAIL) stuff # 128.102.18.3 ames.arc.nasa.gov # pcrrn, gnu grep # 13.1.100.206 arisia.xerox.com # lisp, tcp/ip, IDA sendmail kit # 128.196.6.1 arizona.edu # Icon, SR, SBProlog languages # 128.10.2.1 arthur.cs.purdue.edu # RCS, Purdue tech reports # 18.71.0.38 athena-dist.mit.edu # Hesiod name server, Kerberos # bitsy.mit.edu # mit worm paper # 128.148.128.40 brownvm.brown.edu # MAC # 128.197.2.40 bu-it.bu.edu # bunches of stuff # 128.49.0.1 bugs.nosc.mil # Minix # 26.3.0.103 c.isi.edu # info-ibmpc (Tenex) # cadre.dsl.pittsburgh.edu # jove for the Mac # 128.32.149.18 camelot.berkeley.edu # "pmake", yet another parallel make # cayuga.cs.rochester.edu # LaTeX styles, Jove, NL-KR mailing list # 128.36.0.25 celray.cs.yale.edu # ispell, dictionary # 18.80.0.13 charon.mit.edu # perl+patches, xdvi # 128.146.8.62 cheops.cis.ohio-state.edu # comp.sources.*, alt.sources # 35.1.128.16 citi.umich.edu # pathalias, CITI MacIP, webster # 128.153.4.3 clutx.clarkson.edu # Turbo C stuff, net kit # cs.cmu.edu # screen # 128.193.32.1 cs.orst.edu # Xlisp # cs.utah.edu # A Tour of the Worm # 128.59.40.130 cunixc.cc.columbia.edu # MM mail user agent beta, Kermit # cygnusx1.cs.utk.edu # GCC, MM, Scheme # 128.45.1.1 decwrl.dec.com # no FTP;
