Does anyone actually fight them???? Never hear of such in the posts, but my father tells me that when he was stationed in Korea years back, that he would watch as kite flyers would try and take others out of the sky with razors and sharp sticks afixed to the cross-spar. Perhaps it was only a isolated right-wing(**groan**) fanatical kiter organization he witnessed. Dunno. Anyway, thought I'd throw it out there... -jrt = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = From: griebeno@athena.mit.edu (Kai Griebenow) Subject: Re: Fighting kites Date: Sat, 18 May 1996 12:31:19 -1000 Organization: Massachusetts Institute of Technology Message-ID: <4nlj3n$5q3@senator-bedfellow.MIT.EDU> Hi, to answer the question: sure are Fighter Kites used for real battles in the sky. There are severall different modes of these fights: * Cutting the other kites line by using a special line prepared with glass powder (cutting line). Sometimes severall hundred pilots at once in India. Also in Japan, Indonesia. * In Thailand small Papkaos (I think....) have to ketch large Thai-Chulas with hooks on the line. * Rokkaku battles in Japan (use whatever method in the sky without special hooks or so) to bring the oponents down. In some Carribean regions there are even fights with Razor Blades attached to the tails and so on. These are just some examples. In the US: Sometimes with cutting line, most of the time line contact (no actaul cutting occurs). Also Rokkaku battles frequently on kite festivals. By the way, here are the NAK results of the First Annual KONE Kite Festival at Nahant Beach, Lynn, MA (Line Contact): (NAK = Northwest Atlantic Kitefighters) Round I Paul Lawrence - Kai Griebenow 1:2 Ralf Reed - Claire Giuffrida 2:0 Roberta - Fred Christenson 0:2 Bob Keefe - Paul Brainard 0:2 Bill Flack - Peter Lee 0:2 Carol Flack - Ghost 0:2 ---------- Bottom Round I Paul Lawrence - Roberta 2:0 Claire Giuffrida - Bob Keefe 0:2 Bill Flack - Carol Flack 1:2 ---------- Round II Kai Griebenow - Ralf Reed 2:0 Fred Christenson - Paul Brainard 2:1 Peter Lee - Paul Lawrence 2:0 Bob Keefe - Carol Flack 2:0 --------- Round III Fred Christenson - Kai Griebenow 1:3 Peter Lee - Bob Keefe 3:0 -------- Round 4 - Final Peter Lee - Kai Griebenow 3:0 For Place 3: Fred Chistenson - Bob Keefe 1:3 NAK Championship Points: Peter Lee: 7 Kai Griebenow: 6 Paul Lawrence: 1 Ralf Reed: 1 Claire Giuffrida: 0 Roberta: 0 Fred Christenson: 2 Bob Keefe: 4 Paul Brainard: 1 Carol Flack: 1 Bill Flack: 0 Was a lot of fun!
