It actually starts on Friday with special displays for the media, but that's not open to all. Day 1 (Sat 11): "Club" fly. Unstructured fun day. Day 2 (Sun 12): Structured day of demonstrations for the public. There will be a space for individuals to fly, but the main part of the beach will be reserved for the program only. I will be there for part of Saturday and all of Sunday (working, if you can call a kite festival work). I would like to meet as many rec.kite people as possible, so I made a flag. The flag is only small - about 1.5 metres high, 700 mm wide - and is set up so that it can be on a pole or hung from a kite line. It is hot pink, and has r.k in black. It really is quite easy to see. I can't tell you where the flag will be, because that depends on which way the wind blows on the day. Come along, and enjoy! The highlight was the visit by Randy Tom, who displayed his fantastic applique skills to an appreciative audience. He also ran a workshop which I missed - I missed all the social events :-( . There was a well-patronised auction, too. The main snsor, Malaysian Airlines, gave a ticket for two to Malaysia for the winner of the best home-made kite competition. T We had fair winds; offshore, but good once we got up a bit. The crowd was good - I haven't heard any estimates, but it was similar to last year, which was estimated at 50,000. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Sun, 11 Sep 1994 14:51:29 -1000 From: allanc@syacus.acus.oz.au (Allan Charlton) Message-Id: Organization: Australian Centre for Unisys Software, ACUS Subject: Festival of the Winds I had a difference of opinion with nn, so if this (or something like it) appears twice, I apologise. Festival of the Winds was last weekend, and it was good (again). The highlight was probably the visit by Randy Tom, who showed his incredible appliques to an appreciative audience. Randy also ran a workshop that was widely appreciated. I missed it, and the other social events, unfortunately :-( Malaysian Airlines, the major sponsor, gave a ticket for two to Malaysia as first prize in the "best home-made kite" competition. It was won by Hans Bleeker, with a delightful clown-and-ballons. The festival was well attended by Australian kite makers, including Neil Taylor (maker of the West Coast Angel) and Rob Brasington (maker of the Jester) and Mark Olivier (maker of large-ish Flowforms, Parafoils, and spinning windsocks). The local MEFM man was there, too, although I didn't meet him and don't know his name. Jeff Arundell was there, but Michael Richards wasn't. He was at Le Touquet (Team Ocean Breeze) and went on to Dieppe, and isn't home yet. Other kitemakers included Yvonne de Mille (she of the Sea Spirit and others including some very nice painted silk) and Des Pitfield from New Zealand and Arista Markou from Adelaide, South Australia. Arista had some stunning work in a magnificent applique. Gary Lyons (he of Highly Strung fame) was there, too, with some new stuff. He has gotten out of the kitemaking business and into the windsock making business. Had a huge Koala, among other things. Lynn Vickers had some of her sky art there, and husband Mark had some interesting new kites. Big thanks are due to Peter Dettrick, Godfrey Gamble, and the team: Ted, John, Jan, etc. ... Another great effort. Allan allanc@syacus.acus.oz.au = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
