I'd like to : contact someone there, so am looking for leads Bob, I just came back from Singapore last week. If your going there to fly kites then you will want to take a cab to "Marina South" This is a large kite flying field adjacent to a Kite store and lots of food and beer places. On any given Weekend you will find around a hundred people flying all kinds of kites, but most of them are fighter kites. Warning they all use glass line. There are three main kite stores in Singapore. 1st- East South, a very nice store that deals mostly in western style kites..also fighters...one of the better deals in the store are Peter Lynn Peels for $150. The owner (Anthony Lim) does own a buggy and is a very nice person to talk to. The store is at Marina South. Tel- 2260928. Again... take a cab...the MRT does go out there but it is a long walk to the flying fields. If you drive a car you'll pay almost as much in parking all day or more than the cab cost from Downtown. Don't miss this fly while your there. There are so many fighter kites being cut out of the sky that its like it was raining kites. They don't even pick them back up. So you can pick up several hundred in a day if you like. A friend and I picked up about 75 kites in about a two hours time span then went back to the flying line and flew them against the other flyers....they didn't mind and I had a blast. If you do want to buy some fighter kites for your own ask around the older fighters and they will introduce you to the importers. Be nice to the importers, they will sell you fighters and the glass string at a very good price. I brought back a bundle of 150 fighters and a dozen line spools. If you are interested in picking up kites from China...some rare kites... then you will want to visit one of two stores in Singapore... China Town or Tang Dynasty Village 36 SAGO Street 2 Yuan Ching Road Singapore Singapore Tel 2203623 Shop house No 19 Both stores are owned by the same people and you will find kites there that you will never see in the states They also have the very hard to find Dragon Centipedes. Tell Janet Hi for me. If you have any further questions I'll try to help you. Good luck P.S. I only took one kite with me to fly...My Horney Toad Rok... and everyone on the field went nuts. You would have thought that they never saw a kite before. I let several small kids fly it as I ran around the field taking pictures. It was a blast. P.S.S For a real cool gift for someone vist the main gift store at Har Paw Village (Dragon world). There you will find the miniture Dragon Cetipedes....the cells are the size of nickles and the Dragon heads are very detailed. When I saw it in your earlier posting I wondered what it was but now I see it is a Singapore Fighter with a tail. I have 4 Singapore Fighters now because they are available in NZ and I have been surprised how well behaved they are - not as twitchy as Indians. They are perhaps a little slow but they do what you tell them to :-) Actually when you start to put bridles, spars and towlines on ascii-kites you run into problems because they destroy the basic shape and outlines of the kite. I am interested in the development of ascii-kite pictures but the limitations are great. They cannot compare with the colour graphics but they don't use many kilobytes or storage space. Here's my latest effort at an Indian Fighter viewed from the back of the kite to show the cross-spar and bridle points. Using letters I should be able to do all the detailed dimensions of a kite. The difficulty with ASCII is in producing curves and lines at specific angles. A _._.-.-.-.^.-.-.-._._ _../ | \._ _./ _ - - o - - _ \._ _./ _ - | - _ \._ _./ _ - | - _ \._ C ./_ - | - _\. I thought I followed up to this, but it seems to lost... You don't say what size of kite or what brand of dollar you are quoting, but this looks to me like a rip-off Peel. Aside from the fact that bootleg stuff hurts the people who do so much for kiting, recall that the first that Peter Lynn new of the rip-offs was when they started to get returned to *him* because they didn't fly right.
