Hello out there, Does anybody have any information on a kiting event being held in Washington D.C. sometime at the end of March? (I think I heard March 26 mentioned). Any information would be appreciated as I am not sure where I heard that it was going to be taking place. Thanks! That would be the annual Smithsonian Kite Festival (I think this is the 28th annual, but tha may be off by a year or two). The Festival is held on the western grounds of the Washington Monument, in the field demarcated by Constitution Ave., Independence Ave., and 17th St. The Festival officially begins at 10am, but there are usually folks setting up before 8am. Rain date is Sunday the 27th. The Smithsonian Festival, created by Paul Garber back when it was still illegal to fly kites on the Mall (special dispensation was needed for the festival!) is one of the best known events in the country, and brings in folks from all over. It's definitely worth attending if you're anywhere nearby. This year, in addition to the competition for home-made kites and the annual rok challenge, there will be displays by KAK, LVKS, and MKS, as well as demo fields for all different sorts of kites (single, dual, and quad line). --------- Two weeks later, April 9-10, is the KAK-sponsored Old Dominion SKC, which is being held in Reston, VA this year. This is a full-fledged Eastern League event. Contact me if you need more info.
