Regarding the balancing of flying lines for syunt kites...
 
just like a weight scale (scales of justice).  You stake down one looped end of
the lines and hook the free end to the line balancer.  As you pull on the center
the indicator shows you which line is longer, so you adjust yo ur knots
accordingly.
