It is centered on the gateway to the harbor with units on Jamaica Bay, Staten Island and Sandy Hook, NJ. The park is on the Atlantic bird migration flyway. The estuary eco-system provides abundant food resources for bird and sea-life, making the park home to a diverse animal population of birds and fishes. The Gateway-Getaway weekend is being organized as an "affordable" fund-raiser and consciousness raiser. The goal is to introduce people to Gateway and raise funds for the Friends of Gateway, the park's advocacy organization. Friends of Gateway sponsors conservation and cultural activities at the park, and advocates for improved facilities like the Fort Wadsworth acquisition, Rockaway/Gateway Greenway and improved transportation access to the parks units. Friends of Gateway will be a lead organization in the coming fight to preserve urban National Parks. Tickets for the event cost $25 for adults and $10 for kids and will include Saturday dinner and breakfast. Water, Porto-san, and part-time bathroom facilities and showers will be available. There is plenty of free parking about 1/4 mile >From the camping area. A trailer area will be created but there will be no hook-ups available.
