The drawing below is mine, but the text is from an old posting by Jeff Burka who described this gadget ( or gizmo ) very well. It works well and in the illustration below the tiny white ball is reading almost 5.5 Knots wind speed on the Low Range - because I haven't got a finger over the tube at the top :-) ___ _| |_ _______[_____]_______ I DWYER | | WIND I Check out the Dwyer Wind Meter, I _| |_ METER I available from most boating supply I | | I places (I think Into the Wind used to I 8-| |-5O I carry it too). It's a piece of plastic I _| |- K I with a tiny styrofoam ball floating in I L | |- n I a tube in the center. You hold it up I O 7-| |_4O o I with the back facing upwind and the I W _| | t I ball floats up to show you the wind I | |- s I speed along a scale on the side. In I R 6-| |_3O I high winds, you can adjust the scale to I A _| |_ H I be less sensitive by placing a finger I N |o|_ I I on a hole on top of the meter. Great for the person who can't judge the wind on his/her face. I use it in the winter alot because the colder air will fool me into thinking there is a stronger wind then what is really there. These are great to have. You can get them from heating supply dealers too. good flying!
