We've been seeing more spam from AOL accounts lately. When this happens we can all send a quick email to tosemail1@aol.com. This is the department within AOL that insures users live up to their "Terms Of Agreement" (i.e. tos). Regarding the recent spam's, here is what I sent: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear AOL, Can you please explain to your subscribers, Sally Ann Ellison, John Chen, and Jenny Conroy about appropriate use of internet newsgroups. Their postings to rec.kites are totally inappropriate. This is the 3rd posting of the same spam in 1 month from AOL users. It has been my observation that 900f the spams to news groups that I participate in, originate from AOL accounts. Contrary to the CDA, I don't think you should be held personally responsible for the actions of your subscribers. However, a little eduction of your subscribers would be appreciated. When I tried to email back to these individuals directly, the emails return undelivered. This is my second polite request for some action on your part. Last time I looked in the newsgroups that concern themselves with these issues, AOL were posting daily reports of the accounts they were closing and the newspostings they were cancelling. The accounts to which you refer are almost certainly "throwaway" accounts (AOL are noted for giving away disks with hamburgers...). The spammer *knows* what they are doing. The way to catch them is to carefuly investigate the evidence in the spam to find out his identity. I am unsure as to whether execution is a suitable punishment for murder or rape, but it would get my vote for spamming.
