Subject: Collegiate kite clubs A few years ago I was a member of a collegiate kite club, at Texas A&M University. At the time we thought we were one of two in the country. Is there any clubs at other Universities? Also, I recently bought a Eclipse from Primere Kites, any opions ... I have not been able to get out and fly. One final note, dose anyone know of any good flying areas in the Washington DC area (other than the Washington Monument). This depends on what you're looking for and how far (and in what manner) you can travel. The western grounds of the monument is the most popular place amongst area kiters, and where you'll find folks most weekends. Another popular spot is the field adjoining Little Flower (I think) school up in Gaithersburg. This is a bit of a haul from DC, but the field is a nice size and buggyable. I might be able to piece together directions. Let's see. There's Anacostia Park, down in SW, which is great during the day time, but I don't recommend staying as it starts to get dark. I've flown, buggied, and kite-skiied down there. This is probably the only other place beside the Washington Monument where anybody actually kites in the district. Ocassonally I'll fly in various places on the UMd campus, though I usually just drive down to the Mall. Sandy Point State Park, just past Annapolis (last exit before the bay bridge toll) is pretty nice, and you might even find room to fly on summer weekends. I think entrance is a dollar. Lake Fairfax, just outside Reston, has a nice plateau (and was the site for ODSKC 3). It costs a few dollars for non-county residents. There's a pretty nice field adjoining an elementary school in Herndon which was used for OD 2; this is the last exit before you get to Dulles Airport. I haven't flown there in two years or so, and don't know how it is now. Hmmm, there's another county park in Virginia, but I can't think of the name (or even the road it's on, though I could certainly get myself there!). Jeff -- |Jeffrey C.
