Drachen Magazin 4/93 has a plan of 2 m Cody. It's very good and detailed plan (ala DRAma:-) and should scale up very well. The dimensions are metric but if you read 910 mm as 91 inch (half wing span) you'll get about 15 foot Cody... I'll guess I have not built it myself. Gabby Jr. (916) 678-1815 John Before you decide how large to scale a cody you need to decide what you will use as spars. Generally you can scale to any factor you desire, but spars generally come in specific discrete sizes. I have built many large kites and except for the first one or two I learned to choose the spars I was going to use then adjust the kite size to match. It would be very frustrating to sew a large sail then not be able to obtain a suitable spar. For a cody if you use wood and if you make your own spars then you can make what you want. But if you are purchasing your spars then only certain sizes are available. John , If you plan on building the Cody, then you should get the book S.F. Cody's War Kites by Hugh J.G. Andrew. The book even has Cody's original plans and the author has detailed all aspects of building this kite. The author ensist's that the Cody be built of origin..seems there is a Cody society in England... and describes in great detail how to prepair the bamboo poles. (of course you can substitue more modern materials if desired) I had heard that Kitelines library may be handeling it or Steve at Kite Studio had some on order. Good luck. I'v been meening to build one of these for years...:-( -- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dick Bell dickbell@netcom.com Dallas, Texas = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Sun, 1 Jan 1995 14:46:39 -1000 From: uj165@freenet.Victoria.BC.CA (T. One of the main problems with this book was its lack of detailed construction instructions. If you've done any kite building before, this isn't too much of a problem. I built mine from cotton and bamboo, mainly for economic reasons. It flies, though, and never fails to attract interest from bystanders. This came up about 18 months ago. I gathered the names of those who were interested, wrote to the author (who's name escapes me now... Andrew Hughs?) and sent copies to various places round the world. It didn't go very smoothly and I think that some copies took something like 6 months to reach their destination. I would normaly reccomend Kitelines magazine as one of the best sources for kite books around, but looking in their latest issue, I still see no sign of it. I don't want to do it again (a counting error left me with no copy for myself), but maybe if we ask nicely, Kitelines could live up to their reputation for stocking the difficult-to-source kite books from round the world... It's very good and > detailed plan (ala DRAma:-) and should scale up very well. The It is very detailed, and the plan may be good, but in my opinion it is simply too complicated (sorry to say, Axel). I have had the book of Hugh G Andrews, which was a good help, but I have built my Cody (45cm-unit) from a different much simpler plan. As this was a plan for a simple cody and I wanted to make an extended wing cody, there was some combination of plans required but this was not difficult. BTW, there is also a plan in the "Skywork Experience II" book (sorry again, in GERMAN). I do not have an electronic and ENGLISH version of the plan, from which I built the Cody, but maybe I will have the time and get the permission of Andreas Rathge (who has made the plan originally) to make this plan here available (sometime in the future). > dimensions are metric but if you read 910 mm as 91 inch (half > wing span) you'll get about 15 foot Cody... I'll guess Yes, you can scale a Cody to any size and most of the times it will not be difficult to find the corresponding spares once you know WHICH spares you need. I think you need some advice from people who have already made a cody in your desired size to decide which spares to use.
