Email me if you need to know the exact issue or if I have to send the plans to you. They are in German, you may try to talk me into translating them, I'm not sure if I will have time for that soon. In that article, there is no information about stacking Codys ! Due to the number of spars in this kite, how light a spar can I get by with and still maintain strength? Has anyone built such a kite and have any ideas? I'm thinking of using Pro-Spar 16's. Are these too heavy? Would I be better with a lighter and less stiff spar? Appreciate the help... Due to the >number of spars in this kite, how light a spar can I get by with and still >maintain strength? Gee, a Cody Compound kite. This same kite is what got me into building kites 12 years ago as I wanted one and none were available commercially. Funny how you mention an 8' span as this is how big mine is, which makes for a 5' tall kite. A nice size kite which is remarkably docile. Anyway, way back then, the most up to date framing material was fiberglass and that is what I used. As I recall, the longerons and veriticals are FL75's and the cross spars are two sizes larger (sorry I don't remember the designation of the top of my head). The ends are arrow nocks and required inserts which added more weight. The sail is made from clothing grade 1.5 oz. rip stop nylon edged with gross grain ribbon. All the lines are 150 lb. nylon. All together it isn't exactly what you would call a light kite. However, it flies well in anything from 5 - 20 and if you work at it, you can keep it up in the air (well, atleast I can) with about a steady 3 mph wind. If less than that, get out your running shoes! '-) The only spar failure I've had over the years is one of the verticals and what happened there was caused by the kite piroetting (sp?) on the vertical in a high wind while on the ground at a fetival. Nothing has ever happened to it while in the air. Hope that helps some.
