The fellow that is in charge of this event is Rick Miller of Silver City. He can be reached at (505) 388-2252 or e-mail deannem@cs.wnmu.edu. You'll probably have a better chance of contacting him by e-mail. Here is copy of the e-mail message I received from him a month ago: > > The Cielo Encantada Kite Fiesta will be held October 6,7 and 8. The format will be similar to last year with fun and games on Friday, single line kite making competition on Saturday, and Dual line competition for precision and ballet on Sunday. If the winds are more cooperative than last year we will have more kite fighting, especially smaller kites. We will have a rokkaku kite battle on Saturday afternoon. Ther will be on entry fee for all events. Spectators and non competing kite fliers are encouraged. Call if I can be of any assistance. Rick Miller 388-2252 deannem@cs.wnmu.edu > > For those planning to come you can expect to pay between $35 to $50 US at the local motels and I remember from 2 years ago some offered a discount for participants in the fiesta. Copper Manor Motel (505) 538-5392 The Drifter Motel (505) 538-2916 1-800-853-2916 Holiday Moter Hotel (505) 538-3711 1-800-828-8291 Super 8 Motel (505) 388-1983 The Carter House (bed & breakfast) (505) 388-5485 ($54 to $70) Silver City is located in the South Western part of New Mexico and originally was a center of mining in the region. You'll definitely need to rent a car if you fly into New Mexico. Here is a list of relative distances from major cities in the region to Silver City. There is no major airport in Silver City. El Paso to Silver City 146 miles Albuquerque to Silver City 159 miles Tucson to Silver City 195 miles Please note the kite fiesta coincides with the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, which is a huge event and nearly every room in ABQ. is booked during the first week in October. So if it was me I'd probably fly into El Paso and rent a car there and drive to Silver City. Otherwise plan way ahead if you plan to travel into northern NM. I'm not associated with the Cielo Encantada Kite Fiesta, but my wife and I are avid kite fliers. Hope to see you in Silver City. !!! I'd like to add to what he said by commenting that, although Silver City doesn't have a major airport, Mesa Airlines does have regularly scheduled air service between Albuquerque and Silver City. According to the Official Airline Guide, they fly in some sort of Beechcraft.
