Let me explain . . . I recently met up with a guy called Paul Chandler, a regular contributor to rec.kites and up in Nottingham on Business (hence our rendevouz) - anyway to cut a long story short, he lent me a copy of kiteflier magazine from jan 1995, in which You gave plans for a 3sq.metre quad and buggy (here comes the crunch) I am after some of your lovely seconds ripstop and a little insight into your other creations of the four line variety, and was hoping to contact you via rec.kites. (Anyone else who knows Chris or his email address, will be gratefully received into my mailbox, if they can offer any advice on this score!) (P.S. Ever designed a PVC buggy? Just a thought) Dave Dr.D.Kendall QMC, Nottingham England,UK = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = From: Dave Kendall Subject: Re: CHRIS SANDS Date: Wed, 15 May 1996 00:43:23 -1000 Organization: Cripps Computing Centre, The University of Nottingham Message-ID: Cheers Andrew, I had a chat with Chris on the phone last night and he is sorting me out some ripstop for a song. I will let you guys know how I get on (if you're interested!?) with my first kite manufacturing adventures. P.S. Met Paul Chandler the other day of York Kite Fliers - he also sang your chevron kite's praises! How much is this monster? I trust your plans are a closely guarded secret! ;-) Thanks again, Dave Dr.D.Kendall QMC, Nottingham England, UK. That particular kite isn't too far removed from Nop's Sputnik 4. It's fattened up a bit, it's got 24 cells (making it fatter still), it's in 1/2oz Icarex skin and 80lb Spectra cross-bridle. It's 7m span and 2m chord. I've fiddled with the bridle a bit, to get it "just so", but there's no big secrets. It's biggest value to me has been in exploring the answers to questions I wanted to ask: - Do I prefer fatter cells than Nop for big kites? Yes - Do I prefer 24 cells rather than 36 cells at this size? Yes - Will bridling through the gauze damage the gauze? Yes (*sigh*) - Is the weight/minimum windspeed/size right? Yes - Does it allow me to kitesail in low wind? No (at least, not properly) - Does the reduced number of cells help with compressional strenght? Yes - Does increasing the gauze size help inflation? Yes - Does increasing the gauze size hit L/D? No (at least, not so I notice) - Can I build a cross-bridle to steer a 7m span kite adequately? Yes - Do I need more than 4 lines per rib at this size? No. Then there were some surprises: - Excellent steering (way beyond my expectations) - Excellent stall handling - Excellent deflated tangle recovery - Good L/D (I *think*) - Using individual lines for the cross bridle does not make life easier. - Using individual lines for the primaries instead of loops for each pair (as intended) is a complete pain in the neck. - Some of the criss-bridles are redundant at this size. And since you ask, it's going for US$750, so that I can afford to buy fabric to take a whole new set of gambles...
