I found a skydiving canopy for only $150 in very good condition. A 'foil of such large size, ordered from a kite catalog would be many times more expensive. Few things are as ugly as an old jump bag that has been salvaged for >kiting. Sure, the term "as ugly as a Modulus" comes to mind, but look at it from a beginner's point of view: Wanna play with socks, tails and other line junk? You're gonna need a big sky-hook before you do anything else - a jump-chute brings the entry price down within reach of most of us. For me, it was the first time that I started messing with soft-kite bridles. Newbies are often unwilling to adjust the bridle. With a $150 chute, you've *got* to mess with the bridle - you need to play with the crowning and decide on the angle of attack. I completely removed the bridle on my chute to play with different ideas - there's no way that I'd have done that to a Haggerman... Andrew -- New to rec.kites? Yeah, I'm sure if I bought more kites instead of making 'em, the world would be spared a few more ugly bags in the sky. I don't think that is gonna slow me down. I absolutely *love* the used parachute I got from an old roommate. It takes alot of space, and requires a decent wind to get going, but it sure is a barrel of fun. It never fails to attract a crowd of enthusiastic fliers ready to take a crack at it. Fly [any] kite! That is, foils designed for parachuting are (somehow) different than foils designed for kite flying. If anyone has done this (made the conversion) I be interested in hearing how it went.
