The best way to fly heavy pulling kites is either with just handles or a dead-man harness release system using handles. I recently used a kite to pull me into shore on my front side after walking out into the water. Loads of fun! Problem was that I was using straps. I'm afraid to say that part of my thumb is still numb (still has full movement though). Don't use straps. This is a REALLY serious issue - especially with stronger pulling kites. Check out page 72 of my book, Stunt Kites! for a discussion of CTS and how to avoid it. You can get the book at your local kite store *or* at most libraries in the USA if you don't want to buy it. -- * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Gomberg Kite Productions, International Used 252 Flowform - $600 - email or call 541-996-3083 = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = From: "Samuel A. Is there a safe way to use straps (which I prefer to >handles?)If you're gonna fly the big pulling dual line kites/stacks, I'd recommend the Peter Lynn Dead-man handles as your best bet. You've got the harness strap around you to take the pressure off yer hands, and ya got the Dead-man mechanism just in case you mess up and start getting dragged face forward. I'm assuming that you're flying dual line 'cause you mention straps. If you're flying quad, that's still being worked on. . . Originally I used the Good Grips, but have fashioned my own as my hands are large and the GG's are a bit tight on me. Dead-man releases are the absolute best and safest. We made some out of Seat Belt material and then added some handles by threading some PVC pipe with 1" straping and running it thru the tie point . That way you can have the security of loops and the access to handles at the same time. I'm gonna hafta add some handles to my padded straps too. Thanks Corey. I fly comfortably with wrist strap thingies most of the time, but if there's enough power to drag with, I can't wrap handles of any sort around my wrists without inflaming a (mostly dormant) wrist CTS problem. I tend to use large padded straps, a pair of leather sailing gloves, and a good grip! -jim = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = From: ahclem0013@aol.com (AhClem0013) Subject: Re: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Date: Tue, 25 Jun 1996 04:03:15 -1000 Organization: America Online, Inc. For power kites alot of us use the dead-man for dual and it has a back strap that allows you to let most of the pull go through your body, we have also hooked up straps for the quads tho yo run into the problem of getting out of this should something happen('course it never does. . .). Found out about straps long time ago, no go. Flying power kites does seem to build up strength in your hands, of course Corey knows some good exercise's also. . . aoxo-dean = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
