I'm rather new to the kite scene and looking for my first decent dual-line stunter. I've flown a Go Fly A Kite "Fire Fly" for a while now and am ready to move up to something serious. What is the word on the various Caribbean Kite models? The price is right and they sure look good, but how do they compare to others? A local kiter store recommended the "Griffin 3 stripe" as a good beginner kite that you can grow with, but it's a little more than I was hoping to pay. What about the Caribbean "Aruba"? = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Mon, 24 Jul 1995 17:08:34 -1000 From: jrg4@po.CWRU.Edu (Jason R. What about the Caribbean >"Aruba"? well... i've only been flying dual-line kites for a year now... but my first kite was an aruba and i was very happy with it... i've just recently purchased a new kite... not that i no longer liked flying the aruba... just that i wanted to fly in lower winds... =) you need to get an 8-10mph wind to really get going on the aruba... although it's a great beginner kite... able to withstand the inevitable nose-first dive in to the ground... =) pretty good turns... no incredibly fast... but enough to impress people... it's also pretty loud... especially in winds around 15mph... one complaint that i have with the aruba is that it's incredibly difficult to stall... which is good, i suppose, if you're a beginner... but not if you want to do tricks... =) as for cost... i paid $60 last summer for mine... that's with handles/line and a the umbiquitos nylon bag... that's about it... i guess... =) may the breeze blow thy way... or something like that... -jason -- *-----------*----------*---------*--------*-------*------*-----*----*---*--*- "I bent my Wookie." - Ralph Wiggum -*--*---*----*-----*------*-------*--------*---------*----------*-----------* see it wiggle... see it jiggle... jason r. godlaski, I = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Tue, 25 Jul 1995 06:02:54 -1000 From: gilchgw@zoology.washington.edu (George W. What about the Caribbean >"Aruba"? > Carlyle, I've looked at these kites and they look pretty poorly made to me. The sails don't seem to fit the spars very well and that often means noise, the sewing is poor, etc. If you enjoy the sport, then maybe you should think about investing a few more $$$ in a first class kite. I guarantee that you will get your money's worth in pleasure, durability, and ease of use. I would certainly not settle for less than a Griffin 3-stripe if you want to do anything more than zip about the beach. I think the best kite for a serious beginner is the Prism Eclipse. It's a hefty chunk of change, but the kite performs superbly, is incredibly tough, comes with an excellent instuction book, and is well supported by the factory. It is a kite you will never outgrow. (I have no affiliation with Prism other than an aquaintance with the owners). Cheers, George -- ============================== George W. I can highly recommend it for beg/int use. I axles nicely and makes a good goob of tracking and 90 turns, flys in almost any wind aswell. The only bad points: the price 90 quid in UK and the turtles, it does not recover, really anoys me that !
