I can recommend the Penguin Book of Kites, copyright 1976, by David Pelham. Another good book is Kiteworks, although I can't remember the author right this minute. You might try youir local library. ;-) Steven Thomas Automation Specialist Central Kansas Library System cenks1lb@ink.org = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Thu, 11 Aug 1994 10:41:24 -1000 From: Jennifer Lloyd Message-Id: Organization: AT&T Global Information Solutions Subject: building kites i'm looking for a book or magazine that would help a beginner build her first kite -- does anyone have any recommendations. thanks jennifer AT&T Global Information Solutions Jennifer Lloyd Jennifer.Lloyd@ColumbiaSC.NCR.COM = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Sat, 13 Aug 1994 05:58:50 -1000 From: mre@crl.com (Erik Halberstadt) Message-Id: <32iqjq$li2@crl.crl.com> Organization: CRL Dialup Internet Access (415) 705-6060 [login: guest] Subject: Re: building kites Jennifer Lloyd (Jennifer.Lloyd@ColumbiaSC.NCR.COM) wrote: : i'm looking for a book or magazine that would help a beginner build her first : kite -- does anyone have any recommendations. : thanks : jennifer Hi Jennifer, I've had "Kite Craft" by Lee Scott Newman and Jay Hartley Newman (Crown Publishers; ISBN 0-517-514710) for a long time. It covers a lot of territory previous to stunt kites; box, conyne, Indian fighters, sleds, and parafoils; worinkg with tissue, mylar, Tyvek, ripstop, etc. Also covers a lot of historical material. Very good on the basics of kiting. Ther are quite possibly newer books, but sonce my library has been overflowing for years, I stopped looking. Tight lines! I know this book is a bit old (and you should see the condition of my copy which I purchased in 1980 ). However, it is a good 'overall' book for kiting in general. About the only thing it is lacking is stunt kites. The stunt kite 'craze' really took off after the book came out, although there is some stunt kite info. there. There are numerous kite plans in the back of the book. They are not extremely detailed, but I was able to muddle through a couple. There are a couple of quarterly kite magazines on the market. The one I subscribe to is "KiteLines". [I'd probably subscribe to the other as well, but I don't have the $$$ right now.] KiteLines is carried in most kite shops. If you can't find one near you, or if they don't carry it, call KiteLines at 410-922-1212 (Fax 410-922-4262). They are located in Randalls- town, Maryland- USA. Best Breezes.... Very good on the basics of kiting. _Kite Craft_, published in 1974 (ISBN on my copy is 0-517-514702), is indeed a good book, with lots of great photos, both black and white and color. I would say it's also a bit dated, though this isn't necessarily a bad thing. I've found it to be a great reference source. Unfortunately, the book is out of print now. Used copies may be available here and there. A more common recommendation for a first book is Margaret Gregor's _Kites for Everyone_. Still in print and considered a necessity in the kite maker's collection (along with Pelham's _Kites_), _Kites for Everyone_ has all sorts of plans for single line kites made of out many different materials.
