I missed the Buggy Thang this year. What was hot, and what was not? I hear and read a lot of good things about this Wind Chariot by Steve Kent....is it all what everyone is posting? How do I get in touch to see one and how much? What else is worth looking into? Who was the fastest out there and how fast? The Wind Chariot has its fans, but to me it seemed not much more than a Peter Lynn copy, but not in stainless. All manufacturers claims aside (They all say theirs is the best anyway) I did not see any improvements or innovations. As the costs are comparable, I fail to be persuaded. The plastic seated aluminum buggy from Europe (I forget the name) seemed more a toy than a serious buggy. Again, more or less a copy of Peter's original idea, but not rendered as well. The cheap buggy from Nevada Kite & Ski seemed to me to be just that - Cheap. I worry about how long one will last. And which parts break at the wrong times. At speed, the money I paid is of no importance in comparison to the confindence I feel on the original Peter Lynn buggys. The French buggy from Julian Wolf-Patrick seems much more substantial, but very spendy. I have been on PL buggys since 1991. Own two. And two Land Lizards. The stories about frailties and looseness are a mystery to me. They (PL Buggys) are in my opinion, the best. So come on... Slam me. Take your best shot. But you better be quick. While everyone is arguing about which is best... I will be heading out of sight on whatever buggy is available. Which one only matters if you don't have any. Go Buggy Or Go Home! Is the Wind Chariot a copy be cause the Lynn models are the base that all buggies are compared to due to the amount of time they have been available. Mabe what others are wanting to know is do any of the other buggies available offer new of different ways of doing things, manufacturing techniques, etc. For example, the Wind Chariot is infinately adjustable, allowig a winder range of length on the extension tube. It may not be important to some, but to others of extremely large or short heights, it may be a concern. These are the areas I was initially discussing, and to be honest, once the wonderful Spring sun arrives, melts most of the snow, and again the kiters of the world (Northern Hemisphere that is), the topics will then again shift to kites, events and the standard bitches about competitions and companies. Mabe the whole key is to buggy, no matter what it is, or where you are. It did have one innovation which I believe is both unique and important: The triangulated rear axle. The angles involved make it very difficult to represent in Ascii, but it's something like this: ================================================= '''""~~~---...,,,___()___,,,...---~~~"""''' Where "===" is the regular axle, "()" is a large washer, welded in place and everything else is meant to represent a steel rod from the axle ends, bent over the washer. This triangulation is obviously designed to give lots of extra strength in the direction you need it, without wasting weight on a thicker axle tube. To pick up on something else in this thread, I'd like to see buggy builders break the mold and create their *own* niche, rather than just making Lynn clones. Here's some pointers: - High speed. I've never seen a serious attempt at a buggy designed for speed. - Off road. I'd like to try a buggy with high clearance, wide track and large wheels, so that I can explore the countryside rather than just the lawn. - 2-person. I enjoy spending my time in the tandem giving rides to the pretty girlies. What I want is a 2-seat buggy, motorbike style. "Don't be scared my dear, just hold on to me real tight..." I have heard from both Peter Lynn and the guys at Land Lizard that I could not bend their rear axles (Just like Steve told about the WC). After bending both, they both designed stronger components. In the meantime, I had only to turn the axles over to keep any bending to a minimum. I notice riders who let the bend become pronounced before wondering about solutions. Do not let the bend become more that a fraction. Turn the axle over. The WC does not allow this simple solution without putting that ring in the small of your back. I am leery of add-on solutions. If the axle of the WC is prone to bending and so needs that addition to achieve adequete strength, perhaps a stronger rear axle is the better solution. Just my opinion. aoxomoxoa coreykite@aol.com = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Fri, 2 Feb 1996 01:54:39 -1000 From: Piers Day Message-Id: <823262079.7956@buzby.demon.co.uk> Subject: Re: Buggy Thang - Things that were hot? Anyone know more about this? Andrew, it's a two wheel buggy from a German company called Libre. they have produced a "normal" Peter-Lynn-Buggy-copy with just a nicer seat (same as on the picture in DRAma). You can change your three-wheel-buggy into the two-wheels buggy easely. The tricky thing with a two wheel buggy is the starting. According to some rumours I heard, they are using a strong rubber band to keep the front wheel in the right direction as long as you are not driving. Once you are driving, you cam steer this buggy just as any other buggy. But I wonder whether this will work (the two-wheel idea). I can imagine that once the pull of your kite is too strong you will fall rather brutal on your nose.... Bernhard ... just about to buy the three wheels Libre buggy...
