Hoy has already posted a great report on the KTA show, so I won't expand on that.. The Buggy Boogie Thang 2 was _way_ too much fun!! :-) I won't even start to list who all was there, suffice it to say there were over 100 buggiers all told.. Someone (I disremember who) had built a _really_ neat scaled down buggy (about 8/10 size) for their young son.. I've had a couple of people inquire about that, so if anyone knows who that was please let me know? Corey had some _way_ cool T-shirts made, and still might be willing to part with some.. Give him a call at Windborne Kites or e-mail to coreykite@aol.com.. Did you get _your_ shirt yet?? I got there about Sunday mid-afternoon, and the wind was blowing in the 20's.. What a great site to see about 30-35 bags filling the desert sky on the way to Walt's Bay.. Monday the wind was _flat_ till about noon or so, (I was on desert-time as usual there) and we got to see some great no wind flying by Dean Jordan (and others) with his Orcon Millenium.. When the wind came up it came with a vengeance.. Out of nowhere, locked in and cooking!! Sometime on Monday afternoon, I witnessed the birth of a vented AirFX.. Ken McNiell (Aerie Kiteworks) brought out a standard AirFX to experiment with the high wind.. After he and Dan Brinnell (sp?) flew it for a bit, Ken opened his pocket knife and said to me, "You may not want to watch this," and proceeded to make a few strategic slits in the sail to bleed off some of the excess wind.. After some more cutting and taping back up, I think he had some ideas to take back to the workshop so don't be _too_ surprised if a vented AirFX shows up on the market.. Tuesday morning the wind was blowing hard already, as there was a storm blowing through the L.A. area.. One of those times on the desert that a _small_ kite is much in demand.. Lots of folks flying Pocket Peels, Zip-Zaps, QuadTrac 1.5's, Quadrifoil Jr's, and even my _old_ Quadrifoil 15 got plenty of mileage on loan to Susan Skinner and some other folks.. It was gusting in the 40's easily, and soon it was much more comfortable (and warmer) to stay inside the van.. :-) There was a bit of a rain squall the blew through in the afternoon, not enough to cause any mud on the lakebed, but most everyone got their gear gathered up in a hurry in case a speedy departure was called for.. Someone likely flying a Peel or Sputnik left out a set of dual lines, about 450 lb. x 100 ft. (I'd guess) Spectra in their haste to get packed up.. As I was one of the later folks leaving the lakebed, I wound them up but had no-one claim them on Wednesday.. If you left a set of lines or know who did, get in touch with me and I'll arrange to get them back to their owner.. Wednesday morning the wind was still blowing pretty hard, but settled in to something a bit more reasonable by early afternoon.. It was nice to be able to get back to the SkyTiger 26 and do some cruising.. On one pass across the lakebed, I saw Steve Bateman do a _really_ spectacular crash.. Too bad there wasn't video of that one.. :-) Sadly, I had to return to work on Thursday so I had to leave the lakebed Wednesday evening.. Given that it's _almost_ in my backyard, however I WILL return soon!! :-) -- Dan Rubesh GO Wind Wizard windwiz@west.net FLY A P.O. I built the scaled down buggy from measurements on the Peter Lynn Comp, but without the bends in the side tubing. It ended up looking alot like the simplified buggy in Stunt Kites II. I used 13-5.00x6 turf tread tires and 2-piece nylon wheels >From Azusa Lite with 5/82 bore precision sealed bearings. They are readily available in go kart shops. As I recall, the wheels, tires, and tubes ran me about $150 at the shop I visited. I have since found a cheaper source - perhaps $15-20 less. The one thing that I would do differently on the next small scale buggy would be to use thinner wall stainless tubing for the frame and forks. I used 12 OD x .0832 wall tubing throughout because that was what I could come by at a reasonable price (free). The buggy I built weighs about the same as the full size PL Comp. Not all of it is in the tubing however, as the turf tread tires are relatively heavy also. I have not seen any 2-ply ribbed implement tires for the 62 wheels - but I haven9t looked around that hard. Zach spent alot of time in the pucker bumps and didn9t come close to tweaking anything on his rig. As for the BBT 2 event, ABSOLUTELY THE GREATEST BUGGY EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE! I put 137 miles on my rig and Zach put 35-40 on his. Not bad for an 11 year old kid. I9ve got to work on my jibes and maybe next time I9ll enter the races! See you at Ivanpah in March! For the rest of the country, Please include $5 per order (as many shirts as you can afford) My European customers must remit an additional $6 for cheap shipping or $9 for airmail. All the shirts have been stabilized for prolonged confinement in a bag. They hibernate I guess. As this is not affiliated with Windborne... I can not accept credit cards. Please respond with a check or money order. Sorry for the lack of specifics in my earlier post. Thanks to all who are helping to pay the bills accrued during the last three years of Buggy Newz and both the Buggy Boogie Thangs. If any of you think I am getting rich...
