I am one of the unfortunate that can not afford a buggy :(. So, I have an alternitave for all of us who can not afford $400+ This solutioni is not as good as a buggy and only works in the snow/ice, but it only costs $5. Its one of those plastic/aluminum saucer sleds!!!! I bought one and we had a blast last winter. Got up to about 15 mph in a 30 mph wind. Not bad for a 3.4m peel! This winter we plan to take it out the local resivior and terrorize the ice fishermen! It's about 2 miles long, so we have pleanty of space to roam. Now for a question....is it possible to tack with a buggy/psuedobuggy? I have heard about it, but never seen it done. I know it's possible in a ice sled, and boat, but a buggy with kite... I understand the concept of tacking, but fail to see how the kite can be used in such a maner without stalling (love my peel, hate the edge!). Any sugestions are openly and greatfully accepted! (Other than Peter and Phillip at Ivanpah after being enticed out into the lake by the sucker winds.) The kite flies towards the edge. Near the horizon. Turn the front wheel of the buggy in the same direction. With the kite flying off the side of the pilot, both head into the wind. In fact, crossing the wind is the only really accurate way to measure speed. Otherwise, anyone in front of a hurricane would be the fastest. aoxomoxoa coreykite@aol.com = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Tue, 31 Oct 1995 08:14:45 -1000 From: lord@eskimo.com (David Lord) Message-Id: Organization: Eskimo North (206) For-Ever Subject: Re: Buggies 'n Winter! You need some runners or something to react the side forces if you want to sail across or up wind. You have the sailing equivalent of a keeless boat. Dear Aaron: I tried this last year with a saucer sled and a stack three flexi-10's. The main problem I had was steering and keeping resistance on the kite. If you were successful at either of these tell me how you did it. thanks Scott Humphrey = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Wed, 1 Nov 1995 18:51:58 -1000 From: kml@mathcs.emory.edu (Kevin Lahey) Message-Id: <479ipe$ckg@cssun.mathcs.emory.edu> Organization: Emory University, Dept of Math and CS Subject: Re: Buggies 'n Winter! I knew that I *had* to have a buggy after a similar experience... It was during the big blizzard of '93, when Atlanta got maybe 6" of snow. I had bought a sled and tried it down a couple of hills, but I finally wandered down to my favorite kite flying park with my 10' flexi. I had a nice big 500' down-wind stretch (bordered by high-tension power lines!), and some blizzard-sized winds (maybe 20 mph). After some struggles, I got the flexi up and flying. I hopped in the sled, and hit the power zone. I could have sworn there was a rooster tail flying up behind my sled! I had the most amazing kite-smile on my face for the rest of the day... I suppose I oughta take a crack at your later questions: I found that I could steer a little with the kite, but the sled would just follow the kite. It would be especially difficult to try to turn with a saucer sled, since it would just spin around and keep following the kite -- no matter what direction you were pointed in! Still, it sounds like two miles of flying/sledding might be plenty entertaining... Fly kite!
