Firstly, thank you to everyone who responded by e-mail to my last posting entitled "Brookite kites - are they the best?" After careful consideration of the evidence, it seems to me that the unanimous verdict is that Brookite make the best kites, worldwide. In fact, no one had a good word for any other manufacturer. And no one went dead against brookite. Ian -- Ferengi rule of acquisition no. 111 "Treat people in your debt like family. Exploit them" Ben Sisko, DS9 * Meeeow ! None of them are made by Brookite ( one reason I didn't see fit to comment initially ). I really like nearly all of them ( never could get that Speedwing flying again though...). However, if I pose the question for myself 'Why don't I own any Brookite Kites ? ', I get the answer 'Because they're cheap crap, sold in toyshops and newagents, hardly a real kite at all.' Now as I said, I don't actually own any, so my impression is just that - an impression. But could it be that your sample is biased - i.e. the only people who've bothered to answer you are precisely those people who don't share this impression of mine ? -- Mark de Roussier ******************************************* I do not want people to be very agreeable, as it saves me the trouble of liking them a great deal. ', I get the answer 'Because they're cheap crap, sold in toyshops : and newagents, hardly a real kite at all.' I own two Brookites - a small pocket parafoil and a diamond stunt kite with tail. These are the first two kites I bought, ever. They are excellent for beginners and kids. I flew the stunter for three days, then bought a 'proper' delta. Not Brookite. HighFlyers - who I also recommend for kids and beginners, because they're very tough. Now I don't fly them at all - I stick to the other 20 or so kites I've since bought :-) I don't think you can ever elect anything as "the best" - I wouldn't advise a flyer to buy these kites, but beginners should, as they are all tough and reasonably priced. -jim, .sigless again = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Wed, 13 Sep 1995 17:07:05 -1000 From: Richard Bettis Message-Id: <112702722wnr@fats.demon.co.uk> Organization: Health & Safety Lab Subject: Brookite kites ARE THE BEST! My experience in the UK is that in numbers of outlets they are a (fairly poor) second to 'Worlds Apart' in the 'kites from toyshops' league, a little better in the 'kites from model shops', and next to nowhere in the 'kites from kiteshops'. Perhaps this says something about the discernment (and budget) of the relative customers. My first kite was a 'Worlds Apart' diamond stunter. My first single liner was a Brookite Box Kite. My most recent purchase was a Flexifoil Stranger (at ~ 10x the cost of either of the other two!) I don't have any major criticism of the Brookite kite; it flew OK etc. On the other hand, it wasn't any better designed or built than the other 'cheaper end' kites I've bought. (And certainly nowhere near as satifying as ones I've built myself :) ! ) (Hold on a mo', thinking about it, the only kite I've had fall apart in the air was the Brookite Box; its cross struts are thin fibreglass rod and in a reasonable wind one of them distorted enough to let the other pull away from the frame - at which point I had a somewhat different 'cloth on a string' design) So, my experience suggests that the smaller Brookite kites are perfectly OK for the occasional flight in good conditions. I doubt that the output of any one manufacturer is sufficient for those poor unfortunates who are bitten (savaged?) by the kite bug. +=============================================================================+ | Richard Bettis |"But let a lord once own the happy lines | | | How the wit brightens! IMHO, and many others, Big Easy makes the best made kites around, along with Marty Sasaki, Rev, Flexifoil, and Peter Lynn, but that's just my opinion, and just for quality of design, craftsmanship, and materials. The best flying kite? That's so subjective, I won't even try and answer that. > > In fact, no one had a good word for any other manufacturer. And no one went > dead against brookite. Actually, I never heard of Brookite, but I generally dislike cheap dime store kites. -- bruce forest... bforest@bliss.demon.co.uk bforest@bliss.co.uk bliss@ibm.net 100135.173@compuserve.com PGP pubkey on your friendly neighborhood keyserver.
