Since then I've only gotten about five hours worth of flying time on it. That's the good news. The bad news is I busted it. The new still hasn't worn off so I'm always anxious to fly. I took it out tonight even though the winds were pretty strong. The kite performed well until I accidentally crashed it onto a curb which snapped the end off of the center piece of the horizontal spar. So what are my repair options, if any? Is it possible to repair the broken spar by gluing in an insert similar to the one used to hold the spar sections together or should I just get a replacement set of spars? I imagine that graphite spars are damned expensive. Where do I get them? Can I get replacement spars from Rev? Are there better sources? It will just break again in high winds. As a fair warning, be ready to pay around $20-$25 for that spar( Retail ). Check the Into The Wind Catalog out of Boulder, or BFK ( don't know where they are ). = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Tue, 24 Aug 1993 04:14:09 -1000 From: danr@crash.cts.com (Dan Rubesh) Message-Id: <1993Aug24.071410.4083@crash> Organization: CTS Network Services (crash, ctsnet), El Cajon, CA Subject: Re: Broken Rev Jeff writes: > The center spar with its ferrules runs about $22 from BFK out in > San Diego. BFK is located in Rowland Heights, CA (a bit north of Sandy Eggo) and their toll free number is (800) 638-5483 Ext 1569.. The toll free number is for orders only, and no-one at that line can answer tech questions.. Also suggested in this thread as a source was Into The Wind.. They are in Boulder, Colorado, and can be reached at (800) 541-0314. A temporary fix can be made by using both an internal *and* an external ferrule over the broken spot. The ends of Rev sticks are reinforced to handle the internal ferrule. If you try to use one in the middle of a stick, you'll just crack it. The external ferrule will help prevent that. Overall, though, you really ought to buy a new spar. Splintered graphite really isn't a nice thing to play around with. >I imagine that graphite spars are damned expensive. Where do I get them? >Can I get replacement spars from Rev? You can make a temporary fix by gluing in a graphite rod that has the same outside diameter as the REV rod. I'm not sure, but I think that a Beman 6.3 will slide in for a near perfect fit. If you go this route, use a longer cure epoxy and don't be shy about how much you use. I usually glue a layer of fiberglass cloth over the break as well to keep the rod from splitting. In a pinch, you can use some fiber reinforced tape. Storm Front's team kites often have several repairs in place before the rod finally gets replaced... >I imagine that graphite spars are damned expensive. Where do I get them? >Can I get replacement spars from Rev? Are there better sources? Depends what you mean by better. The Sky Shark rods are less expensive, but you can't get the equivalent in strength and stiffness of a Rev 4 or 5 wrape in a Sky Shark. If you are flying in lighter winds, the Sky Sharks made a lot of sense, since they are lighter and stiffer than Rev rods. They are cheaper too. Oh, I sell Sky Shark's and they are a sponsor of Storm Front, so keep that in mind... -- Marty Sasaki Harvard University Sasaki Kite Fabrications sasaki@noc.harvard.edu Network Services Division 26 Green Street 617-496-4320 10 Ware Street Jamaica Plain, MA 02130 Cambridge, MA 02138-4002 phone/fax: 617-522-8546 = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
