Subject: Box kite record at World Cup


We were quite excited about a call we received at 6:45 this
morning from Australia. An ecstatic Richard Dutton called to
tell us that he was successful in his record-breaking attempt
at the "Most Box Kites Flown in a Train" at the World Cup.

The two foot box kites, made by the "Buffalo Box Kite
Company", were each custom made; green and yellow
(Australia's national colors); and silk-screened with the
festival logo. The train of 101 kites was lofted and hung
rock-steady against the Australian sky. Each kite was
individually numbered and later meticulously signed by each
of his team captains. The roster read like a Who's-Who of
veteran kitefliers: Cory Jensen, Michael Alverez, Dan Buxton,
Dick Hargrave (great-great grandson of Sir Lawrence
Hargrave)...  to name just a few.

Richard calls Hamburg, NY, home (a suburb of Buffalo). His
enthusiasm for kiting swelled ever since he saw my husband
Bill flying a Rev at a local kite festival 7 or 8 years ago.
In fact, his first kite was a Rev. He's been collecting and
making kites ever since. His "Buffalo Bills" legs won the
admiration of Martin Lester at this year's Montreal Festival
for it's detail and flying ability.

Anyways, Richard's train of box kites was constructed indoors
in a mall and was walked in procession to the flying field,
along with a police excort stopping traffic along the way.
After a flawless lauch, it hung in the sky for over fifteen
minutes as the crowd cheered, cameras clicked and video
cameras taped. As an impromtu finale, the train was fashioned
into a 300' arch, much to the chagrin of those who claimed an
arch of box kites could never fly!


Congratulations Richard, we never doubted you....
