(Which left me without access to rec.kites, oh boy I'm still laughing. Seems Andrew sucked a whole bunch of gullible people in. But then again it's pretty easy. David Gomberg does it to you all the time.) Anyway, the 2nd Annual Bluebonnet Kite Fest is now planning the 3rd annual event. This year was terrific. It started Friday evening. It was a bit over cast when I stopped by the field to help rope off a few fields and check the access to electrical outlets. At 4:30pm I had to leave the field and check in to the hotel, (BTW - the Bluebonnets comp 5 rooms for SWSKC staff.) and meet with Bonnie. She took me to the local radio station where we did a 30 minute spot to promote the event. This was fun. (I got to say all the nasty things I usually have to write. NOT!) Back at the hotel we were set up for a judging seminar which was to be presented by Abel Ortega. There were about 20 to 25 individuals who showed up to attend the seminar, but Abel didn't get their until after 9:00pm. (Alegeries, seemed during a sneeze he took a wrong turn and started going towards New Orleans.) :) Saturday morning was still over cast but the SWSKC staff and volunteers are the best in the country. Greg Hernandez the head judge took over the duties and got every thing under control in no time. Abel Ortega and Keith Anderson were able to hold a pilots meeting and we were ready to hold the first event by 10am. Cynthia Salazar and Nadlie Cisco worked the computer and regristration and scorekeeping. An entire field was marked off for Bennie and Donna Hammock. They launched several large kites including an octopus he got from..., well you know. We had an auxilliary field set up to run events in case we started to fall behind and a demo field where Kelly Reed set up lessons for the public. And we still have more room. It was a bit windless on Saturday but the staff took advantage of the field layout and moved what could have ruined the event with boring precision and allowing the main field to stay open for childrens events and other demos. There was a local karate studio which came out and provided one of the best karate programs I have ever seen. They held the audience spell bound and kept them there. Just when they were finishing up with their program we moved Masters precision to the main field with out losing the crowd. There were clowns (no Dodd and Andrew weren't there, thank goodness) all over the place making balloons for the kids and a train ride which took the kids around the fields. This is another great SWSKC event. This is how it should be. Support >From the local community and sponsors outside the kite industry, the lowest regristration fees in the country and as Jerry Hereshey, from Kansas said, this is the best event in the SWSKC. Thanks again to all the volunteers for all their help to make this event run so smooth. You guys made it happen. Saturday night the banquet was sold out and the auction brought in almost $1,500 from a few kite donations. Thanks for the donations from the few. Sunday was picture perfect. No clouds and a nice steady 10mph south wind. I can't decribe it any better than that. Richard Dermer set up a table in the main tent and provided a workshop for teachers about how to make kites, and he didn't get as burned as I did from being out in the sun. The PA system was wonderful. We had 4 speakers surrounding the field. I don't care where you stood or which way the wind was blowing you could hear your music perfectlly. This was a great event. Was considering requesting AKC regional for this event next year. Heard a rumor that the committee wanted to charge the events a fee to be included. Sorry you can count this event out. As a matter of fact we are putting together a package for an outside sponsor which will include insurance, then we won't need to be sanctioned. Most events within the SWSKC raise money for charities. I can't see paying money to a for profit organization, which will only provide ranking, at the expense of having lessor money to give to charitiy. Not worth the cost. I can't see paying a sanctioning fee, except to exploit the ghost insurance.
