Hi, I read in the WWW site (http://www.ensta.fr/~germond/kites.html) that there is a kite festival at Blackheath, London this Sunday. As I'm relatively new to kiting I haven't been to one of these yet, what happens at them? Is stuff usually on sale? (i.e. do I need to take my cheque book!). Are prices generally good? Do I take my Flexi's? Also what sort of time do these things get going and finish? As I'm relatively new > to kiting I haven't been to one of these yet, what happens at them? Err... Well, people eat, drink, get sunburnt/soaked, plus fly kites !:) The format of a kite festival is normally that there are arenas set aside for particular displays and competitions, with traders set up close by, and a ( very variable ) amount of space ( i.e. the rest of the site ) used for public flying. Often theres a camping area aswell. I expect Blackheath will be crowded. I increasingly find that the hassle of finding *and keeping* a stunt flying space in the public areas isn't worth it at a festival, at least not during the main part of the day. Belonging to a club can sometimes help alot here though - you can 'claim' a space by planting the club feather/Cobana and know that someone you trust will be around there all day. But I think a stable single line kite that you can hold by hand is often the most useful thing to have at a festival. It doesn't take up much space, you can move easily, and you can watch whats going on whilst flying and drinking beer !. Blackheath is unique amongst festivals I have been to, in that the road(s) crossing the site are not closed for the event, which can make things more exciting at times ! > Is stuff usually on sale? As for prices, they are usually shop prices unless the traders get into a price war ( which only happens rarely, and then only for the cheaper stuff ). The best way of getting a discount is to join the KSGB ( about 8 I think ? ) and find a friendly trader - most traders will give a 5-10 0iscount to KSGB members. If you find a better way - *mail* me !:) > > Also what sort of time do these things get going and finish? > I don't know the details for Blackheath, but they rarely start before 10:00, and usually wind up at about 17:30. -- Mark de Roussier ************************************ A nice man is a man of nasty ideas.
