I was unwinding the kite the other day with the sail out of the bag (fool) in an strong wind (big fool) the wind caught the sail and pulled with a sharp snap at which point the winder exploded into 3 pieces in my hands and all four lines were knotted instantly into a knot that Alexander the Great would have problems with. This took 4 hours to untangle but worst of all I couldn't fly that day. I now have a 6mm ply winder and keep it in the bag when deploying. -- Tim Jones | SIC GORGIAMUS ALLOS SUBJECTOS NUNC | timj@uk.gdscorp.com | We Gladly Feast On Those Who Would Subdue Us | = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Tue, 28 Mar 1995 07:11:35 -1000 From: dhiggins@bfsec.bt.co.uk (Declan Higgins) Message-Id: <3l9g07$did@pheidippides.axion.bt.co.uk> Organization: BT Labs, Martlesham Heath, Ipswich, UK Subject: Re: Beware of foam winders Tim Jones (timj@uk.gdscorp.com) wrote: : This is a cautionary tale : I have a Quadrifoil and wind the four lines on a snazzy hi-tech card : winder made from light foamy sort of plastic. Funny, *exactly* the same thing happened to me ... 3m Quadrifoil + big wind + moran winder = winder shattered in three pieces + nasty tangle. The winder I use now is home-made from wood. For those lines which are dedicated to *both* a kite and a set of handles (ie the line stays attached at both ends and in the bag's bag), I don't bother with a winder at all, and simply put the two handles together and wrap the lines around them. It can take a little practice to do this without getting minor tangles in the lines, but knowing what I'm doing, I have problems with tangled lines with about the same frequency as when I'm using a card winder. > and all four > lines were knotted instantly into a knot that Alexander the Great > would have problems with.
