Given fat wheels, what type of tires give the best all-around performance on a dry lake or other hard pack surface? I've gone through a number of ribbed wheelbarrow tires and am considering a tire with a flat profile (bigger contact patch) and a knobby or street tread. Tom, One of our local TKF members, the inimitable John Compton, had knobby tires on his buggy for ice and snow buggying. There was very high rolling resistance. Futher, John amazed everyone in Erie, PA last year when he showed up with hundreds of small screws installed through the knobbies like little metal studs. He painstakingly puched each knob and tighted and bolt, washers, and a nut on each. He then locked the whoe thing in place with a lock-tight product. It was absurb to see. He did, however, do some pretty decent buggying on the ice. The tires look, and probably were, quite dangerous to use. It was also very load. As he passed be you'd have sworn there was a machine gun letting go beside you. As I recall, Lee and Sue were not at all impressed.
