A recent trivia article in the Globe & Mail, May 9th, 1995: "As the sun goes down over the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, the children leave their village to fly their kites," says The Sunday Telegraph. "But this is no ordinary evening sport: the children are going fishing in the sky - for bats." In the evening, fruit bats leave their caves and must run a gauntlet of kite strings with hooks every metre or so. Captured animals are hauled in and sold alive a few days later as a delicacy. BBC producer Andrea Florence, who observed the sky fishing said:"the bats were squealing frantically - it was like babies crying." -- Vaino Raun..... This was part of a (wildlife) documentary film recently shown in the UK (hence the quote from a BBC producer) Not only did it contain the sequence on bat fishing, but also a sequence of fish fishing (!) using a vine-line, a leaf-kite (honest, no manufacture involved at all by the fisherman, apparently) and spiders-web for the 'hook' and bait. Now, if small boys can fly kites in the dark and fishermen can fly leaves, why do my kites like the ground so much? -- +=============================================================================+ | Richard Bettis | "I make no warranty with respect to this | | | statement and disclaim any implied/explicit | | | suggestions of usefulness for any purpose" | +=============================================================================+ = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Thu, 8 Jun 1995 21:34:20 -1000 From: Andy Millson Message-Id: <3r8ths$pqq@hawk.ee.port.ac.uk> Organization: University of Portsmouth Subject: Re: Bat Fishing??
