I will not write on the stunt kite event since I was on the single line field and couldn't really follow the stunt kite activities. There was a single line aspect this year at BASKC, special guests Stretch Tucker (who gave workshops: Parafoil (hands on) and Transition Tails) and Scott Spencer (gave a workshop on Ripstop Weaving and invented the transition tail). Betty Hirschmann (AKA Sectretary) came together with Scott. We had a really good time. Scott brought numerous flags and also his nice arch with him. Stretch had a couple of very nice kites: parafoils with applique tiger and lion (really great designs!), a patriotic looking multiflare, his new small Rokkakus, and a Genki with a new Stretch Tucker style (interesting and wild). I would like to thank all three for their participation! I really enjoyed seeing Stretch for the first time personally (after long e-mail contacts) and also to meet Betty and Scott again. I myself gave a Fighter kite workshop (mylar fighter for low wind - I used one of those on Sunday in the competition at low wind, bamboo spine and 3/32'' carbon fiber cross-spar, dimension of a large Indian Fighter). Overall we had nice wether but a serious lack of wind....it was kind of tough to fly kites. We all did our best anyway. Other nice activities were a demonstration of a giant Peter Lynn Gecko (by the Kiteman) and all the other kitefliers partcipating on the single line field. Jenny Tucker and husband Richard joined us on sunday and demonstrated their this year Smithsonian winning kite (joined effort in maser category). Their kites get better from year to year and it is allways a pleasure for me to share the sky with Jenny and Richard! Kitemaking competions were won by kitebaron (most artistic kite) with a nice Rokkaku and by the Kiteman (single surface) with a nice delta. Congratulations to both of them. On Sunday a Fighterkite Battle by NAK (Northwest Atlantic Kitefighters) was part of the program. We had a small but enthusiastic number of participants. I myself also participated - possible with fighter kites since line contact is most of the time easy to judge. The NAK rules allow participation of judges (in those battles another Fighter Kite flier is the judge). After long and often very interesting battles I was actually the lucky one ;-). Here the results: Round I: Kenn Gross - Scott Spencer 3:1 (was a really great battle) Jenny Tucker - Kai 2:3 (Jenny was really good!) Gary Quinton - Richard Tucker 2:3 Edd Webb - (Ghost) 3:1 --------------------------------- Bottom Round I: Scott Spencer - Jenny Tucker 3:0 Gary Quinton - (Ghost) 3:2 --------------------------------- Round II: Scott Spencer - Kenn Gross 2:3 Kai - Gary Quinton 3:2 (Gary was fighting great - I was nearly gone at 0:2) Richard Tucker - Edd Webb 3:0 --------------------------------- Final Round: (because 3 were left) Scott Spencer - Kai 0:3 Kai - Richard Tucker 3:0 Richard Tucker - Scott Spencer 0:3 I should say that the conditions were very difficult and sometimes luck decided the battles. Anyway, the participants had a lot of fun - and that was much more important than anything else in these battles. NAK Championship Points: Edd Webb 1 Kenn Gross 1 Gary Quinton 1 Richard Tucker 3 Scott Spencer 5 Kai 7 The first three got a medal sponsored by the organizers of BASKC (Gary and Maggy Engvall) - thank you! Maybe someone else posts the results of the stunt kite things ;-). By the way, thanks Francesco from Italy. My friend Archie Stewart brought the bottle from you (the one you gave him in Italy), we shared the first glass and also let others of the gang of KONE drink to your health. Thanks again Francesco! Happy Kiting Kai = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
