Sure enough, my kite sense was right and there were kites in the air. (actually a pretty rare event, considering that this _is_ Hawaii, home of 'the best winds in the world', tm ;-) Today we had a visitor to the islands with his bag of older kites. There were kites that i've heard of, or that i've seen ads for from kite mags of the early '80's. The most interesting one for me was the Banshee. I believe that Cory Rosler (sp?) made this kite. Kind of a neat concept. This one was about 5 years old. The owner bought it in washington, and has never flown it 'cause he couldn't figure out hot to put it together. After assembling it (almost 10 minutes :-( We put it in the air. Its a kick. The kite flexes as it flies. Bear in mind that we had 15-18. gusting to above 25 mph (measured speed) The kite gets considereably lower aspect ratio as the wind picks up. And the wingtips seem to have about 8" of 'chatter'. Has there been any 'advancement' made on the design? I think that it could be built with a better tensioned trailing edge and speed up a lot. my kites were screaming, but the banshee was pretty slow. Gee, that kite had the neatest bent aluminium spars, really cool and official looking. I wish i had cash on me, i might've tried to buy the kite! This was a 8 footer, do they come in larger sizes? Was there ever a carbon version? Is this kite still under production? questions? (insert yours here < >?) thanks for your time/patience/forbearance dang the winds are strong these couple of weeks. Anyone coming to kauai? bring vented kites. nathan sendan sendan@aloha.net = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = From: sendan Subject: Re: banshee? Oops, I hope i didn't give too much credit to corey roesler. His name was the only one i've ever heard mentioned in conjunction with the banshee. Due homage to Skip Parks. And thanks to Steve kent and Flying wings for both informing me of my mis-information. nathan sendan sendan@aloha.net = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = From: Peter Loop Subject: Re: banshee? I can get you the makers name and address but I don’t have it now at the keyboard. Banshee is not longer in business. Cory took over design and modified it. Because of its shape it worked well for the KITESKI (kite powered water skiing). > never flown it 'cause he couldn't figure out hot to put it together. I have a manual for the Scimitar which is very close if you need it. > Has there been any 'advancement' made on the design? I think the Scimitar was a big improvement in the design, it is faster, but it is still a slow tracking kite. On the other hand it is one of the fastest turning kites there is. > I wish i had cash on me, i might've tried to buy the kite! If you really want one of these kites, Carl Crowell (ccrowell@willamette.edu) has several, in many sizes, that you may be able to talk him out of. I'm keeping mine! > This was a 8 footer, do they come in larger sizes? A Banshee is shaped like a bow, there is only one leading edge rod and it goes from on wing-tip to the other. The wing span is variable so instead of measuring size as wing-tip to wing-tip, the size of the kite is measured by the length to the leading edge rod. Using this measure I have seen a 20 footer and I think they when even bigger. > Was there ever a carbon version? The kite is still available, and come in 6, 8,16 and 20ft. sizes. Frames are carbon fibre, and they are a little pricy.
