I thought it may be of interest : "CODY RELICS AUCTION GOES AHEAD The sale of artefacts from the family of the great pioneer aviator, Colonel Samuel Cody, will go ahead next month despite an intervention by another of his descendants, Mr Frank Cody, of Staines. " The article then goes on to describe how various descendants of Colonel Cody are bickering about who really owns his collection and has the right to sell it. The auction referred to is being held at Sotheby's in January. There have been a few Cody articles recently in this paper, as the famous Farnborough airfield (aka the Royal Aircraft Establishment) is nearby, where Cody made many of his flights with both kite and plane. A monument to Cody was recently unveiled there, in the form of "Cody's Tree". This is a full-size replica of a tree to which Cody used to tether his equipment, and is situated within the airfield (and is therefore unfortunately inaccessible to the public, since the airfield is now part of the Defence Research Agency). The local "Cody Society" are currently lobbying the DRA and the council to consider moving Cody's Tree to a public spot, and to construct a museum commemorating the history of flight at Farnborough, including the work of Colonel Cody. If there is further interest, I would be happy to keen rec.kiters updated on further developments. Steve, It's good to see that fellow Texan (Sam Cody) was so well liked in his day and is now seen in good light and honor'd so well. Sure wish I could be at the auction. -- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dick Bell dickbell@netcom.com Dallas, Texas = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Tue, 12 Dec 1995 09:33:15 -1000 From: coreykite@aol.com (Coreykite) Message-Id: <4akldr$bcj@newsbf02.news.aol.com> Organization: America Online, Inc. Is it possible for you to contact Sothbys and inquire as to the availability of said book? I know I am interested in the book, as I am probably incapable of affording any of the relics, and I assume others would appreciate it as well. I have had several inquiries about the availability of the catalogue for the Cody auction. A catalogue is available from Sotheby's, but unfortunately they are asking 14 UK pounds to ship it to a UK address, so presumably it will be more expensive to ship one abroad. If anyone is interested, Sotheby's are on +44 171 493 8080, and the auction is being held on Jan 24th.
