Contact Mike Stringer at 208-336-7340 for more info. HIGH DESERT SATURNALIA Alvord Desert, Oregon May 25 - 27 1996 "Saturnalia" is defined as "any period of unrestrained revelry" The idea is to start with a blank canvas, the pristine Alvord Desert, a 50 square mile dry lake bed at the base of the 10,000 foot Steens Mountain in southeastern Oregon, Camp in the center of this surreal landscape and invent fun stuff to do such as: wind racers, kite racers, stereo drums, astronomy, mtn. bikes, kites, road bikes, a bonfire, or anything else you can come up with. Winds during the days should reach 30mph, perfect for experimenting with homemade wind racers. The hot springs are rustic, and just the right temperature. We will build a sculpture in two days to be sacrificed Sunday night to the Goddess on Incineration, Fields a small berg located 20 miles south of our site has gas, food, etc. Bring all your own camping stuff as no food or water will be provided. Plan to drink a gallon of water per day per person and to use a gallon a day for cooking etc. Any car can make it but rain on the lake bed (unlikely) could make for some dicey driving, so watch the weather and don't drive anywhere wet. You have to pack out anything that you bring in and we will be asking $5 per person to help offset costs. RSVP or question call Mike Stringer (EFX Research) Boise, ID 208-336-7340 BUGJON says "Sounds like alot of fun, However, I won't be able to be there because I'll be kayaking in the San Juan Islands. The NWBPA has been planning a buggy event at Alvord on this weekend for a long time, and to the best of my knowledge it has no connection to this "Saturnalia" thing, there is certainly no plan to build and burn anything, or to pay any fees! If you want to come to Alvord and buggy, I would suggest that you contact Morrie Williams or Mike Eason I can't say for certain, but I suspect that this post of Jon's will be news to them. From what I understand, Alvord should be big enough for two groups to use it at the same time. During the last ten years the weather patterns in this area have reduced the rain fall quite a bit. Therfore, May was an excellent month to visit the desert without 90-100 deg. temps. Now the normal patterns have returned and Oregon is headed for a record rainfall this year. Last year I was in the Alvord only to find 80-900f it covered by water. This was a problem since I had hoped to drive to the East side of it. I would like to go but I can just see it a huge lake 2-3" deep. That mud is really slick and soft when wet. I guess if you want to get really muddy and soaked, it could be a lot of fun. But unfortunately tacking against the wind would be very difficult. Since I have never buggied, do I have my facts straight. That the buggy wheels need to grip the ground in order to turn or tack back effectively? I have been kiting for a couple of years now and would like to attend a buggy event in this general area. Is there a list of buggy events posted anywhere? Any help would be appreciated! //Richard\\ P.S. I just talked to the BLM in that area and Rick says about one third of the desert is covered by water. The problem is that is is going to be raining for the next week and the rain is coming from the south. Also this much rain will melt the snow and compond the problem. If you want an update call Rick Halls at (541)573-4400. There's an event at El Mirage this May30-June2; see some of the current posts. We generally stay off of the lake bed when wet or muddy because the lake bed is very impressionable; tracks are left very easily in the mud, and then these tracks dry leaving the surface anything less than flat. It can be very dangerous buggying across a lake bed and hiting someone's old tracks at 45mph. One of these days I'll post a small piece about the characteristics of the clays that make up the surface that we buggy on. Just how high are the organizers? Sounds like a gas.
