Date: Sat, 1 Apr 1995 21:04:02 -1000 From: andrew@tug.com (Andrew Beattie) Message-Id: Organization: /usr/lib/news/organisation Subject: April 1st Now that the 1st of April is over, I suppose I should point out the various spoofs, so as not to cause too much trouble... The first one was the Kite-Cam. Wavey Davey was right (but should have waited until *afterwards* before giving the game away...). The maiden flight was scheduled for April 1st. This evolved through the week. To start with, when you pressed the trigger, you got a message explaining that the kite wasn't flying yet. At Friday lunchtime (April 1st in New Zealand), this changed to a text "April Fool" message, then a couple of hours later, I guessed how to transfer GIFs through a CGI-script and changed it to a black picture, overlaid with a message along the lines of "It would appear that someone left the lens cap on..." Between Midnight on April 1st and now, prople from 63 different sites have pressed the trigger. My favorite catch on this spoof was Simo, who wrote asking if he could write up the experiment for Drachen... Next came a message about the world sailing record in a boat called "Spiral Rift" (an anagram of "April First"). This was pure fiction, based on an idea expressed by Peter Lynn in Buggies Boats & Peels. I had hoped to format this like a newspaper-cutting and fax it to Peter Lynn, but I ran out of time... David Lord spotted that my publishing of the profile for the SkyTiger (in response to a non-existant request) was completely against my established policy. I've not had any other feedback on this posting. If you actualy take the trouble to plot the profile using the plot program in Kite 1.0 (the disk that goes with Nop's Stunt Kite 2 book), you will see that the profile is useless because it is plotted upside down. Finaly, there is poorly disguised forgery of a posting by someone else, which is a fairly obvious spoof, because it is: - completely out of character - dated April 1st - miss-spelled in both name and Email address Kevin was first to trace this back to me...
