Lots of rec.kiters, a few made it to the WKA Pizza Feed which was on Wednesday this year, and we saw more as the week progressed. Judy and I didn't keep track of them all, however, so I will list a few names and apologize to those I miss. I would like to thank Morrie and Kelci Williams for helping to get the @ buttons produced and distributed, people seemed to like them. Rec.kiters who made it include Morrie, Dave Lord, Brian Johnsen, Bob Harris, Robin Haas, Jon Reinschreiber, Karen Gustavson, Gina Hsiung, Brian Dockter, Brad Bushell, Steve Irby, Carl Crowell, Kevin Lahey, and more I'm sure to remember as soon as I go ahead and send this out. Many of these folks were joined by spouses, some of whom are also rec.kiters like Judy, and some who are not, like Carol Lord. There were also some soon-to-be's like Francis Hall, Kathy Goodwind, Creda Axton, and Dave Gomberg who will be joining us in the months to come. As for the festival itself, it was a good year. The weather was mostly great, and the kites were as spectacular as ever. Things got under way Monday with buggying taking place front and center on the hard pack in front of the main festival site. Light winds kept the activity somewhat sparse, as lots of sail was required. Scott Skinner was able to give some tandem rides with his 10m Peel, and Frank Fiegler and Robbi Sugarman had some fun flying Modulus Kites. The Quadrifoil and Force 10's at 50' and up saw some action, but those with 25s and such were forced to watch. Thanks to Morrie and Kelci Williams for making this happen. As the week progressed, the buggies moved down the beach to avoid the crowds, and I got too busy to join them, but I hear they continued to have fun as tide and wind conditions gave them at least some good days. There was way too much kite activity over the seven days to report it all here. Peoples Choice kite was Mike Hagen's Blue Genie, with Deb Cooley taking second with her aquarium theme kite whose exact name escapes me, and Dawn Clark took third. People Choice Kiteflier was Tom Sisson, and team was Decorators. The Decorators, along with Tony Wolfenden of Australia, were this years featured international guests. Ray Bethel flew three stunt kites for 12 hours, 12 minutes non-stop. And Ray really does fly non-stop. He wears those baggy pants for a reason. Roger Maddy was there, demonstrating his unique method for flying three quad line kites simultaneously. Other notables flying demos in the stunt realm included Team Peregrine and Chicago Fire. Fighter Kite competition saw some favorites go out early, including Johnny Hsiung, Ghopal Das, and Tom Joe. The event was won by Matthew Alden. I missed the Rokkaku battle, but I believe that Yakima Sun won it. I'm not really sure on that one, and don't know who else placed, either. Also showing some good stuff were folks like Art Ross, Joel Sholz, Aime Barsalou, Scott Skinner, Jerry Sinotte, Mike Sterling, Sonny Hamner, Dave Christenson, Bill Lockhart, Betty Street, Bill Lester, Don Mock, and many, many more. We didn't set a new Cody Kite Fly record, but seeing more than 70 Cody kites up together was a stirring sight! Remember the Washington State International Kite Festival is the third week in August. For 1995, it's August 21-27, so make your plans now. We will have tables set aside at the WKA Pizza Feed again, which will be on Thursday evening night next year. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the banquet/auction on Saturday evening. I saw at least half a dozen Frank Kenisky name tags, each spelled differently. What's the difference between famous and infamous again? I really appreciate your effort and that from some other people writing such reports. By reading your article I get a least a little bit the impression that I have also attended the meetings. And these reports remind of the fact, that the US is very far away and I have very seldom the possibility to visit such a festival and meet all the rec.kiters that are mentioned in the text. I wonder how you always succeed in getting the names of the kite designers?! Hope that we will very soon see some pictures from the festivals appear in our famous rec.kites archive?!? And although Andrew (or is his name Charly?) doubts that Anne has really taken some pictures, it would be nice to see them, too. :-) Bernhard +------------------------------------------+ | Bernhard Malle | | Bernhard.Malle@dbag.ulm.daimlerbenz.com | | Ulm, Germany | +------------------------------------------+ = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Thu, 1 Sep 1994 19:46:55 -1000 From: Steve Irby Message-Id: Organization: Delphi (info@delphi.com email, 800-695-4005 voice) Subject: Re: another WSIKF report Bernhard Malle writes: >Thank you, Judy and Steve for your report from WSIKF. The earlier report from (oops! I failed to recall his name) the visitor to the northwest, was especially appreciated. I would be very interested to read reports of any kite festivals in Europe. The little details are especially helpful in getting the "feel" of what it would be like to be there. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
