For its first year, the festival presenter, the Los Alamos Cultural Arts Council, will have a "fun fly" -- a non-competitive event open to all ages. Pre-festival activities will include a number of free kite making workshops on April 20 at the Bradbury Museum. Done in conjunction with the County's Earth Day celebrations, this workshop will take place >From 11 AM to 1 PM at the Museum. Additional kite making workshops, sponsored by PTOs, are scheduled for April 23 at the Pinon School from 6:30 to 7:30 PM on April 30, and at Barranca Mesa School from 7 PM to 8 PM. In addition there will be workshops in Espanola and Pojoaque -- times to be announced. All workshops are free and students will be provided with basic materials to make a simple kite. The Festival weekend will kick off on Friday, May 10, with a lecture demonstration by a special guest, internationally recognized master kite builder Scott Skinner from Monument, Colorado. He will be speaking at the Bradbury Museum at 6 PM. ART/FLIGHT will begin with registration starting at 8:30 AM. Flying will begin at 9 AM. There will be a kite flying workshop and special demonstrations from 10:30 to 11:30 AM, with special guest Scott Skinner flying Indian fighter kites from Silver City and some stunt kites. A People's Choice Award will be given to the most popular kites. The Los Alamos Cultural Arts Council co-sponsors the event with the Bradbury Science Museum, the County Parks and Recreation Department, the YMCA, Youth Working for Youth and the Senior Center. We would like to recognize the generous contributions that help to make this event possible from DuPont, Office Depot and others.
