Date: Tue, 21 Feb 1995 13:30:57 -1000 From: andrew@tug.com (Andrew Beattie) Message-Id: Organization: /usr/lib/news/organisation Subject: Announcement: Kite Web access by Email After some delay while we ironed all (most?) of the bugs out of the system, I can now proudly announce that the Kite Flier's Site on the World Wide Web is now available for access by Email. Everything on the Web is described by a Universal Resource Locator (URL). The URL for the main index on Kite Flier's Site is: http://www.kfs.org/kites/index.html To pick up this page by Email, send just send a message as follows: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: service http://www.kfs.org/kites/index.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note that the subject must be "service", not "Re: service". This is to avoid mailer-bounce loops. You can list more than one URL in your message, but use only one per line and put nothing else on the line. Lines that don't contain an URL will be silently rejected (but if we find *no* URLs or one that we don't like, we'll send you a help-message). The pages will be returned as one per message. The URL contains 3 main parts: "http:" this indicates that the URL is a WWW page (as opposed to FTP, perhaps) "//www.kfs.org" This is the machine that the page is on. "/kites/index.html" This is the path and file name for the page. Note that www@kfs.org only serves URLs that start http://www.kfs.org/ This means that you can expect good service (because you won't be in a queue that is serving the whole net). We encourage other web service providers to include a similar local service for their own site. In the fullness of time (not so long these days...), you will recieve the page in your mail-box. Perhaps something like this: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kite Fliers's Site Look and see what's New[1] Read the General FAQ[2] [1] http://www.kfs.org/new.html [2] http://www.kfs.org/Genfaq/index.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When you use a graphical interface to browse the Web, links to other pages show as highlighted words, for you to click on them with the mouse. In Email, the link is identified with a number next to the word that would be highlighted. To follow a link, simply copy the reference into the body of another Email to www@kfs.org (not forgetting to set the Subject to "service"). Because we only serve our own site, we will happily mail out images if you request them. I try to always include the size of the image in the text, so that you know what you are letting yourself in for! Images (usualy GIF for diagrammes and JPG for pictures) are uuencoded and sent as one mail-message per image. We can't tell if you can only read 16Kb mails and we make no provision for this (yet...) Perhaps someone would be kind enough to follow up this posting with a pointer to a DOS and MAC uudecode? I encourage you to browse for yourself, but expect to find FAQ's (the General, Address and Review FAQ's are on line - The Festival FAQ is still on the "todo" list), there are plans by Simo and Bernard, quite a few pictures to browse, various gems from the archives, including all the postings by Ron Reich, stuff about Axels, some wisdom from the Kite Oracle, Simo's compulsary manoever diagrammes and commentaries and new stuff coming on-line every few days. Don't miss the "What's new" page to keep up to date with new additions and the Master Index, that contains all the index pages together, to save you from seeking them out and downloading them all individually. Advanced stuff. The address FAQ uses a form. To search for the address that you are after, you will have to construct your own URL. If, for example, you would like to know all the addresses in California which have "Wind" in their name, you would use: http://www.kfs.org/cgi-bin/kite-addr?name=wind&state=CA The poster who recently wanted all the shops in Belgium could use: http://www.kfs.org/cgi-bin/kite-addr?country=belgium Note that the search does not distinguish between Capital and lower-case letters. Finaly, If you would like to contribute, please drop me a line. Happy Browsing. A while ago I was browsing in comp.graphics and read the FAQ. In it it recommended an excellent Image Conversion and Display Program. It supports many formats including MPEG etc. It will also uuencode and uudecode individual files or groups of files consisting of individual graphics files as well as multi part uuencoded files. Multi part files are uuencoded files broken down into 2 or more small files (ie 15K files) which are sent as separate files then combined into a bigger single file again. This is useful if ther is a problem sending big files. The program is freeware called DISPLAY ver 1.87, and available by FTP ( I can't FTP direct but was able to do FTP by Gopher)> Available at ftp://NCTUCCCA.edu.tw/PC/grphics/disp Which is in Taiwan. Also I believe it was zipped into 2 files a and b. It should be unzipped using -d to create subdirectories. If you get it you should print out the doc as many features are not readily apparent from the normal screen (use a mouse on the top line). A nice feature of DISPLAY is that you can create an index file of many pictures which can be downloaded to show in minature many pictures. Another program I found using veronica search was Wincode which is a windows based uuencode/uudecode program. However multi part files have to be combined first using DOS. -- Vaino Raun.....
