From: NWBPA.News@das.harvard.edu Subject: Alvord Report Message-ID: Organization: Not Much! Date: Fri, 31 May 1996 14:34:52 -1000 About 16 or so buggiers were at the Alvord Desert (Dry lake) from Thurs. to Tues. over Memorial Day weekend. Two or three pilots did their qualifying runs on Sat. for their Buggy Nekkid pins, assuming they get their evidence to Corey. 8-22 MPH winds Friday, 70+ degrees, slightly cloudy, some fairly long runs accross the south and SW end of the playa, about 1/4 to 1/3 of lakebed with standing water mostly hugging the west shoreline. Set up on SW corner again on Sat. and delt with light winds (NE) untill mid afternoon when I took a trip around the S tip of standing water (1/2" deep) over to the E side. Found 16-22 MPH solid winds there and a 4 mile width by 15 mile length of dry hardpack! Everyone moved over there and we had three+ hrs of good buggying. Clear skies all day, felt like low 80's temps. Very sunburned! Two hour soak in the hot-springs later cured. Sunday to Eastern shore again but variable light to medium winds (8M Sput and 10M Peels only) untill about 4PM when quad 3's, Morries Peel and my 5.2 Sputnik worked great. There's a huge area of pucker bumps over there that we didn't find last Nov. We bounced and jumped the bumps untill dark! I finally got over one that was about 48" high after three or four tries. Kept getting high centered on my butt on the top! Hot and sunny all day. Monday back to the E side again but wind from NW. After sitting and waiting all day we found, too late, that the landsailers had great wind all day on the West side! And we delt with sucker winds the whole time! Oh well, we did learn that the wind varies pretty drastically over the whole lake, depending on the direction. It can be dead calm in one location and 20MPH just 5 miles away. Monday started out slightly hazy but warmed to no shirt sunny and warm by 2 PM. Ryan, my stepson, and I went back out after dinner (7:30) to give it a try and measured 22-28 MPH. Decided that the 30, our smallest kite, was too much so went to the hot springs till almost 12:30 AM. Drove back Tues , 10 hours. :-( We already have sanctioning and insurance arranged for Labor Day weekend, early Sept. There were about 16+ of us there, think that some people were scared away by weather reports for other areas. I guess a huge storm hit central Nevada south of us and some rain swept through to the north around Burns. We could see the clouds bank up way to the west, on the other side of the mountains but it was downright hot on the desert! I think I'm going to have to invest in a second buggy for Ryan, he's hooked! I think that he did around 35 miles himself. He did 24.? MPH with the 30 and was doing pretty good with the 5.2 Sputnik later too! Couldn't drag him off the buggy for very long! Hopefully some of the other NWBPA "Buggy Ninnies" will add to this. To all going to the El Mirage Spring Thang next week: Have a good time at Mirage next weekend, and say hi to everyone. Tell them about Labor Day also, should be quite a crowd there then. But, what do you call it when you spin around half way, unintentionally, when you're high centered on the top? A Butt Keel Spin Turn, or just Whooooaaa! ?
