I've been sitting on the edges of the group for a while so I thought I'd chime in with a question or two (Gee, Jeff I guess I'll fewer next time I see you). First off, I'm busily building Flowforms, and Jeff mentioned that you can't just scale them up. I have plans for the 8, what is different to make a 16?? Is there some general rule about scaling the flowforms? And on a more social note, a local(?!) radio station (100.1 WGRX) is holding a fly this Sunday (June 27?) and I was wondering if anyone was going? (Note: this isn't a reccommedation, actually I just wanted to know if it would be any fun! I neither represent, or endorse the radio station in any way.) -Sandro ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sandro Fouche' lazarus@cs.umd.edu I know I should have a SIG, but I'm not that witty. These are my opinions, can't you tell; they're written in crayon, ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sandro Fouche' lazarus@cs.umd.edu I know I should have a SIG, but I'm not that witty. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Tue, 22 Jun 1993 04:05:07 -1000 From: jeffy@syrinx.umd.edu (Jeffrey C. When I dig 'em up, I'll mail you some of the posts I saved when I first brought up this subject a year or so ago. But for now, here are some clues on my own version of the '16' (Please note that the Air Affairs T-16 has a base of 54x36, which is somwhere around 13 square feet. My kite is a bit bigger, but still under 16.) Standard Sutton stuff: 3 ribs, 3 keels. Face is 52.75" x 40". The keels extend 20" down from the face along the leading edge. Inlet length is 9.75". Height is 11.5" (on the side panels (full length airfoil/keel), if you continue the 'vertical' line of the leading edge of the keel up). The highest part of the airfoil's curve is ~13.5" up from the face. With my current template, the lid is 62"x40", but this length may vary based on the way your airfoil section turns out; be sure to measure the top edge of the full airfoil (ie the outside walls, not the ribs) to obtain a measurement accurate for your kite. Internal ribs are at 25 423936ntervals (10", 20", 30") and are 34 5/8" long. Each rib has 2 venting holes, 3.25" in diameter. (note, there are also the 4 standard venting holes in the face and lid, also 3.25". Placement of these holes varies with my applique). The cutout in the rear is 20" wide and 16.25" long. A total of 9" is left unsewn at the center (4.5" on either side of the centerline). Bridles are typically 10-12'. This is a Sutton FlowForm (as opposed to a Rowland), and a modification of the Air Affairs version at this size. For what it's worth, this particualar version won the "Best Parafoil/Soft Kite" at the 27th Annual Smithsonian Kite Festival (the Orchid kite which many of you have seen in scans). It flies quite nicely. In case you hadn't guessed yet, all of the above notes will probably only make sense to someone who's built flowforms or at least has the Greger plans in front of them to compare with. Obviously, this post is not intended to teach folks how to build a flowform. > And on a more social note, a local(?!) radio station (100.1 WGRX) >is holding a fly this Sunday (June 27?) and I was wondering if anyone was >going? Oh? I hadn't heard about this one. Where is the fly being held? Chances are that I won't be able to make it, due to a conflicting fly up in Mt. Airy, MD at the Linganore Winecellars. But I'd appreciate it the info anyway,... BTW, Sandro, I have those TIFFs if you're still interested in trying to get a better conversion...
