Subject: Albuquerque I'm travelling to Albuquerque next month. What's the kiting conditions normally expected in this area? I'm planning on taking a large single-line delta (for teddy-dropping), a Rev I and a couple of dual-line delta including a new ultra-light. I also urgently need some replacement spars for my big delta. It currently uses 8 foot x 0.75 inch dowelling and I may have trouble getting them into the overhead locker. Either carbon fibre or similar lightweight material would do. Would I be able to buy somet n NM? My brief experience as a tourist there was that the winds were fluky in the valley, and stronger(!) on Sandia Crest overlooking ABQ (not much of a flying field up there on the cliff though). << I also urgently need some replacement spars for my big delta. But no kite shops in ABQ to my knowledge. I'd suggest that as soon as you know where you can receive parcels, call Into the Wind in Boulder, CO, toll free in the US (800) 541-0314 or (303) 449-5356 from outside the US. They have a very large selection and can advise you, and will ship speedy means. chin UP brooks leffler kyteman@aol.com = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Date: Wed, 7 Sep 1994 16:51:58 -1000 From: bwg001@carina.unm.edu (brian wad gordon) Message-Id: <34lu8e$me4@lynx.unm.edu> Organization: University of New Mexico, Albuquerque Subject: Re: Albuquerque [snip-it was all one line] Malcolm, Going to the Balloon Fiesta eh? (just assuming, correct me if I'm wrong). Fall can be a good time to fly in ABQ (my favourite). Conditions can vary greatly though. For example, two Octobers ago a gust of 100 mph (60 kph) was recorded within the city. However, 950f the time the winds are LIGHT, the air is DRY, and the air is THIN. Alququerque is said to be the highest metropolitain city in the US (5500ft). (After experiencing the traffic at the Balloon Fiesta, I think you will agree that the drivers here are among the "highest" in the world. :-) On October 7,8,9 some of the locals will be travelling down to Silver City New Mexico (2 or 3 hour drive) to the Cielo Encantado Kite Fiesta. More on that if you wish, just ask. (Organized by Rick Miller and Anthony Howell) There are only two locations for kite parts here in town. Very limited. Some what expensive. I mail order everything. .75 inch wooden dowels can be found at any local hardware store in 4 foot lengths. I don't know if they are rammin or not. It's hit and miss at the local shops if you want carbon or fiberglass replacements. I can look into this if you wish. I guess, as far as kiting conditions are concerned, expect to see light to medium winds. I'm going to predict that if it does get windy, it will be no more than 20-25 mph (12-15 kph). High tempreatures will average around 75-85 F (20-23 C ??). Let me know if I can be of anymore help, E-mail me for details.
