Yep, almost time for the AKA convention, once again held near my home in Seaside, OR. The question is, are there any rec.kiters who will be coming in early to catch North Coast Challenge (weekend before AKA)? If so, I'd like to meet some of you. Let's coordinate (yeah, right...). Subject: Re: AKA attendees--North Coast Challenge? Well the question is out. Who's going to be at the North Coast Challenge and the AKA convention at Seaside. I will be, and I'll be staying at the beachside Shilo (I am registered for this Saturday for the North Coast Challenge and the following Wednesday through Sunday for the AKA convention). Now I would like to arrange a supper or lunch at one of the restaurants if possible. Being from Oregon I am passably familiar with some of the restaurants, and there are a few with excellent food and a reasonable price (of course they tend to fill up quickly). And of course the restaurant we choose will be somewhat dependent on how many wish to go to dinner (or lunch). So if people who wish to have a rec.kites meal will get in touch with me, tell me if they are arriving, and when they will be available, I will take it on myself to try and arrange such a meal. If you forget to send me a note on the net, then leave me a message at the Shilo Inn, when you get to Seaside. I'm hoping this will work a lot better than the attempts made at Long Beach (Right Anne?). As to the dinner, obviously the AKA Banquet night, and the dinner and auction night are out, because everyone going will have tickets to those events. On the other hand, it might be possible to set up a couple of rec.kite tables at those events (the banquet is how how I met Anne Rock at Long Beach). By the way, if you're a hiker, bring your hiking shoes and your camera. If the weather is clear (and it has been as of late), and we can find an empty slot during the convention, Saddle Mountain is very close. Its a reasonably short and easy hike to the top (ie: there is a path, and even children hike to the top all the time). As Saddle Mtn is the tallest mountain in that part of the Coast Range, you can see for several hundred miles in some directions. You can see at least 5 major mountains (Mt Hood, Mt Adams, Mt Ranier, Mt Jefferson, Mt St Helens and under extremely good circumstances Mt Baker), and a whole passel of smaller ranges. You can see the complete mouth of the Columbia River, the city of Astoria, up the Washington coast and down the Oregon coast. You can even see the Pugit Sound. If you're into majestic scenery, it's worth the trip (on the other hand, you may have to drag me off the beach kicking and screaming if the wind is good).
