I have also collected the usual assortment of lines on Moran card winders, extra spars, etc. I need a bag! What do YOU use or recommend? The MLD bags are the most heavily advertised, but I'm not sure what else is out there, and what people prefer to use. I saw a bag mentioned in the last issue of SKQ in the new products section; anyone got one of these? They're built tough, and fit even the longest kites in the "full-sized" size. I've taken my MLD bags on airplanes, through sand-storms (viz. the Beach in SF in the summer), through rain, snow, etc.--they just keep coming back for more... I don't know about the bag your talking about, but it would be hard-pressed to beat the MLD (I'm not saying its impossible). p.s. So far, I really like it. I generally use the handles to haul it around though, rather than the shoulder strap since I'm barely 5' tall. Both of ours have 2 pockets...and I could see where having 4 would be helpful. If you have access to a local store, ask them about irregulars. Both of ours are irregulars in that the pockets may not be exactly in line, or a seem isn't perfectly straight, etc. I saved some money on them because of it...and they still get the job done. I need a bag! I've heard that Stan Swanson of Condor Kites (Boulder, Colorado, USA) is making a convertible bag: you can "break" the bag down into carry-on length (and break your kites down to fit) and then reassemble the bag into a "full-length" bag at your destination so you don't have to disassemble your kites every time you move/at the end of each day. No details, no sizes, no colors, no prices, and no affiliation with Condor Kites (and no phone #). However, I find ski-bags very good value for money. They come in various sizes and styles and can be picked up at special prices in the off season. I have three bags; two cost $20 and the other cost $80. The more expensive one has pockets, shoulder strap, tighteners and is well padded. I guess availability of ski-bags has alot to do with your location. It's definitely worth a thought if you can get your hands on them! Grant. I just carried my kites 2000 km on the roof of my car, even in heavy rain the tube kept them dry. The tube is expandable from 80 cm to 200 cm, handle, removable shoulder strap and a lock. The last one I bought at the end of skiing season was about $20. For everyday usage I have old expandable TOL-bag. They are sturdy, well constructed and definitely take a beating. I'm on my third back now, the other two having worn through on the bottom from being dragged across the ground. If I had picked the bags up and hadn't let them drag, they would still be in service. I slip a heavy duty cardboard tube inside the bag for trips on airplanes. I believe that they are made of Cordura. I would avoid the flourescent/hot colors since they fade very quickly. One of the old bags is/was orange, now the top is a dull melon color while the bottom is the bright orange. -- Marty Sasaki Harvard University Sasaki Kite Fabrications sasaki@noc.harvard.edu Network Services Division 26 Green Street 617-496-4320 10 Ware Street Jamaica Plain, MA 02130 Cambridge, MA 02138-4002 phone/fax: 617-522-8546 = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
