I began stunt kite flying this fall with a Top of the Line kite called the 'Snap'. I love the sport and have persuaded my girlfriend to buy me another kite for Christmas. What should I ask her to get me? I think she is prepared to pay up to about $150. The Snap is only 4ft and I would like a bigger, more powerful kite, and one which is more challenging to fly. To add to all the other suggestions you might get.. Option 1..Icarex Stranger or Jester Arc Light Kiss girlfriend and go flying. Option 2..10 ft Flexifoil. Tell girlfriend "Wait'll you see my biceps!" Option 3..MEFM..you'll have to add about $150 of your own. But you'll have THE best made kite. Option 4..Rev...depending on which, you'll have to add from $50 to $150. Personally? One only? Tough one, but it's have to be the Flexi or the Rev. In my oppinion, its not a good idea to start out with a BIG POWERFULL kite like a 10' Flexifoil, but something slightly smaller. That way you can see how power kites handle, and what you are getting your self into (such as a full body cast ;> ). I recomend a Griffin it has a wide wind range, a HUGE sail, handles well, and only costs about US$90. It was my first "big" kite. It pulls nicely, and makes ALOT of noise. Or, if you just want to skip to a REALY BIG kite, just buy a 3.4m Peel. Then you will realy know the meaning of power (and this is just a small Peel :) ). The only draw back to a Peel is it costs about US$400. A Flex is about $100 cheaper and gives about the same amount of pull, but isn't as good for buggies. Then there is the other extreem, a Prizm Micron. It is one of the smallest kites comertialy avalible. It is about 2ft across and is like flying a bumble bee on dentle floss. It is FAST and SMALL. VERY FUN. And most of all VERY CHALLENGING to fly. Well let's see; there are a ton of what I call joker kites out there on the market these days. Stick to a kite that is known by fliers in your area or what you have heard people talking about. The Griffin is a good starting full size kite, but I would also recommend even something like the K2 by Aerie Kite Works or something bigger like the Maxima by New Tech (ten footer for about $150) This kite will give you a taste for more precise flying and give you the thrill of getting dragged around! Peter, Lots of good choices in that price range, but my favorite would have to be the Box of Tricks. The Buena Vista XTC, the Stranger, and the Prism Eclipse are other good selections, but none are as good all around performers as the Box. It's also by far the coolest looking kite of the group. All are "radical" kites, capable of doing all the tricks. All of these are well made, durable, etc. I have at least one model of each of the above, and there's no question in my mind that the Box of Tricks is the best of the bunch. The major drawback of the Box is that they are hard to get. Small factory, limited production, high demand. BFK in Califormia carries all of these kites at quite fair prices (the owner, Hoy, is active here on rec.kites so you should be able to get his number easily if your local dealer can't help you out). (see the other posting) Air F/X, Bad Boy - two great kites but up there in the $200-250 price point. Jam Session - can be had for under $150 - includes video, "windtammer" and a lot of extras...
