According to you Jason you can't ever again mention who you fly for (the guy that gives you kites free in exchange for you to show case and promote his kites) That my friend is advertizing. What's your solution Jason? According to you I should not post any more, maybe I shouldn't. Out of all the "Fine line adverts, why did you single me out? What is the real reason Jason? My apologies, please don't take my reply as a flame, just a light-hearted observation. Like you, I don't mind *some* commercialism on the net but it becomes very difficult to draw the line. The post a few days ago advertising Quad handles was perhaps in disregard of the "no-advertising" policy, and the sender was humbly aware of it. However, I found the post quite acceptable and potentially useful to rec.kites readers, even though it was blatant advertising (the handles are actually very good, BTW). Similarly, I don't mind the *occassional* posts from shops or dealers saying "yes, we have the complete range of XYZ kites, email me for more info" or "I've got some stock to clear and I'll offer it to rec.kites people first at a 20 0iscount". What I really dislike is the guy selling his hacky sacks every other week and even worse, skuzzy lawyers selling green card scams. Compared to that, I'll tolerate most things. (1-800-827-6364) Subject: Re: Advertising ? This little diatribe is indicative as to why the kite industry isn't making progess. Dodd is being informative. Without proper advertising future flyers will not know where kiting events are. Without money for advertising outside of the kiting industry this sport will never grow. As a brief example:Here on the left coast or I would prefer to say NEW coast there are events for rollerbladers. There are 2 parts to each event, basically an urban part and a half pipe. At the event in Santa Monica this year, 126 contestants paid $50 to do one event or $75 to do both events. I haven't seen 126 contestants at a west coast kiting event in the two years I have been kiting. When people ask me about the cost of kiting, I compare it to a good pair of rollerblades. Remember:without money, it's almost impossible advertise. The kiting industry needs to go outside of the kiting industry to get more money to make kiting more legitimate in the eyes of the general public. I know that sport kiting can be as big a volleyball.
